The word"practical" is derived from the Latin pragare, which translates to "to grasp onto." Pragmatism is a philosophical tradition that views the world as inseparable from agency within it. It also views knowledge as a result of experience, and focuses on the way that knowledge is applied. William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a brand new term for some old ways of thinking. His lecture series, "Pragmatism - A New Name for Old Ways of Thinkin'" was an answer to this. He began by defining what he called the Present Dilemma in Philosophy'--a fundamental and seemingly irresolvable clash between two ways of thinking: the hard-headed empiricist belief in the experience of things and going through the facts, versus the tender-minded tendency to a priori principles that rely on rationalization.
