Drugs that stimulate the brain such as methylphenidate or amphetamine are commonly prescribed. Medications Many of the medications used to treat ADHD in children can be used on adults. However, the dosages are different and the medications can cause adverse effects that aren't present in children. The doctor will look at the medical history, the family health history, and other health conditions of the patient to determine which medicine is most appropriate for the patient. The most commonly used type of ADHD medication is a stimulant. It adjusts levels of two chemical messengers within the brain, norepinephrine as well as dopamine. The stimulants methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine (commonly called Adderall) increase the availability of these neurotransmitters. They can improve focus and decrease aggression and impulsivity. They come in various forms like chewable tablets, liquids and skin patches.
