So far, to our knowledge, all studies have focused on the retina, neglecting the changes that might be present in the cortical portion of the visual system. We performed a multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation of the visual cortex in 25 children with SCD (mean age 12·3 ± 1·9 years) and 31 controls (mean age 12·7 ± 1·6 years). At ophthalmologic examination, 3/25 SCD children had mild visual acuity deficits and 2/25 had mild tortuosity of the retinal vessels. None showed optic pathway infarcts at MRI or Transcranial Doppler abnormal blood velocities, and 6/25 disclosed posterior cerebral artery stenosis (five mild and one severe) at MR-angiography. Compared to controls, SCD children had increased posterior pericalcarine cortical thickness, with a different trajectory of cortical maturation and decreased connectivity within medial and ventral visual neural networks. Our findings suggest that SCD affects the development and the tuning of the visual cortex, leading to anatomical and functional changes in childhood even in the absence of retinopathy, and set the basis for future studies to determine if these changes can represent useful predictors of visual impairment in adulthood, biomarkers of disease progression or treatment response. With an increasing demand for edible protein, research on new extraction methods is attracting more attention. The effects of such methods on functional properties are important. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of ultrasound-assisted extraction on the extraction efficiency, structure, and the emulsifying properties of peanut protein isolate (PPI). Ultrasound-assisted extraction significantly improved extraction efficiency and shortened the processing time. The nanostructure, molecular weight distribution, and particle size of PPI were altered by ultrasound-assisted extraction. The emulsifying properties of the PPI from ultrasound-assisted extraction were significantly improved compared with alkaline extraction. Peanut protein isolate had lower molecular weight fractions, higher levels of hydrophobic amino acids, and the highest fluorescence intensity with ultrasound intensity, temperature, and time of 3.17 W cm , 35 °C, and 30 min, respectively. These contributed to the higher emulsifying activity index and emulsifying stability index of the PPI emulsions. The uniform distribution of droplets and smaller particle size of the PPI emulsions was also observed. The results suggested that ultrasound can be used to induce the conformational changes to modify the interfacial association between protein-oil phases, thereby improving the emulsifying properties of peanut protein. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry. It has been suggested that tumor deposits (TDs) may have a worse prognosis in rectal cancer compared with colonic cancer. The aim of this study was to assess TDs prognosis in rectal cancer. Patients who underwent total mesorectum excision for rectal adenocarcinoma (2011-2016) were included. A case-matched analysis was performed to assess the accurate impact of TDs for each pN category after exclusion of synchronous metastasis. A total of 505 patients were included. TDs were observed in 99 (19.6%) patients, (pN1c = 37 [7.3%]). TDs were associated with pT3-T4 stage (P = .037), synchronous metastasis (P = .003), lymph node (LN) invasion (P = .041), vascular invasion (P = .001), and perineural invasion (P < .001). TD was associated with a worse 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) among pN0 (51.2% vs 79.8%; P < .001); pN1 patients (35.2% vs 70.1%; P = .004) but not among pN2 patients (37.5% vs 44.7%; P = .499). After matching, pN1c patients had a worse 3-year DFS compared with pN0 patients (58.6% vs 82.4%; P = .035) and a tendency toward a worse DFS among N1 patients (40.1% vs 64.2%; P = .153). DFS was worse when one TD was compared with one invaded LN (40.8% vs 81.3%; P < .001). Guidelines for laboratory assessment of fetomaternal haemorrhage (FMH) was published by the Australian and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion (ANZSBT) in 2002. However, data on adherence by practitioners and clinical outcomes are lacking. For each patient, the volume of FMH, methods and timing of FMH quantitation, dose of RhD immunoglobulin, maternal and cord blood groups were analysed against the corresponding antibody screen and identification. Following FMH >6mL, only 15% and 11.5% of cases adhered to current ANZSBT guideline on follow-up testing and supplemental RhD immunoglobulin dosing respectively. Despite the provision of single supplemental RhD immunoglobulin at a ratio of 100IU to 1mL fetal red cells, the rate of RhD alloimmunisation in RhD negative women with RhD positive fetus or fetus of unknown RhD status following FMH >6mL is at least 4%. Poor compliance with guidelines for follow-up and management of large-volume FMH may contribute to increased risk of RhD alloimmunisation. Further analysis of data is warranted.
