Thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA) may grow asymptomatically until they rupture, with a mortality over 90%. The true incidence and prevalence of this condition is uncertain and epidemiologic data is scarce, understudied and dispersed. Therefore, we aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the incidence and prevalence of TAAs in population-based studies. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL from inception to October 2020 for all population-based studies reporting on incidence and/or prevalence of TAAs. Data were pooled using a random effects model. The main outcome was the overall available worldwide incidence and prevalence of TAAs. The secondary outcomes were to evaluate the incidence of ruptured TAAs, differences in the location of these aneurysms (either ascending, arch or descending aorta) and differences in prevalence/incidence across different study designs. Twenty-two studies were included in the review and meta-analysis. The pooled incidence and prevalence of TAAs was 5.3 per 100,000 individuals/year (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.0; 8.3) and 0.16% (95% CI 0.12; 0.20), respectively. The pooled incidence of ruptured aneurysms was 1.6 per 100,000 individuals/year (95% CI 1.3; 2.1). We found a significant difference of the prevalence in autopsy-only studies, which was 0.76% (95% CI 0.47; 1.13) and the prevalence of TAAs dropped down to 0.07% (95% CI 0.05;0.11) when these studies were excluded from the overall analysis. The current epidemiologic information provided serve as a base for future public-health decisions. The lack of well-design population-base studies and the limitations encountered serve as calling for future research in this field.Radiation is a constantly evolving technology which plays a role in the management of lung cancer in a variety of settings as an adjunct to surgery, definitively, and palliatively. Key aspects of radiation oncology-including acute and chronic toxicities of thoracic radiation and rationale for choosing one modality of radiation over another-may be obscure to those outside the field. We aim to provide a useful overview relevant for the thoracic surgeon of radiation technology and delivery. A review was performed of salient articles identifying radiation technologies used in lung cancer which were summarized and expounded upon with focus on integrating their history, evolution, and landmark trials establishing basis of their use. This article reviews the four fundamental means of external beam radiation employed in managing lung cancer and provides visual examples of comparison plans. We also touch on potential practice-changing developments in regards to proton therapy and radiation in the era of immunotherapy. Radiation oncology has evolved considerably over time to become a critical part of lung cancer management, particularly in early-stage inoperable disease and locally advanced disease. Maximizing tumor control while minimizing toxicity drives treatment strategies. Knowledge of these fundamentals will help the thoracic surgeon answer many questions patients pose regarding radiation.The aggregation of misfolded proteins is a fundamental pathology in neurodegeneration which remains poorly understood due to its exceptional complexity and lack of appropriate characterization tools that can probe the role of the low concentrations of heterogeneous protein aggregates formed during the progression of the disease. In this review, we explain the principles underlying the operation of single molecule microscopy, an imaging method that can resolve molecules one-by-one, its application to imaging and characterizing individual protein aggregates in human samples and in vitro as well as the important questions in neurobiology this has answered and can answer.Diabetes has been demonstrated to be one of the strongest predictors of risk for postoperative delirium and functional decline in older patients undergoing surgery. Exercise is often prescribed as a treatment for diabetic patients and regular physical activity is hypothesized to decrease the risk of postoperative cognitive impairments. Prior studies suggest that anesthetic emergence trajectories and recovery are predictive of risk for later postoperative cognitive impairments. Therapeutic strategies aimed at improving emergence and recovery from anesthesia may therefore be beneficial for diabetic patients. Wistar (n = 32) and Goto-Kakizaki (GK) type 2 diabetic (n = 32) rats between 3-4 months old underwent treadmill exercise for 30 min/day for ten days or remained inactive. Pre-anesthesia spontaneous alternation behavior was recorded with a Y-maze. Rats then received a 2-h exposure to 1.5-2 % isoflurane or oxygen only. The time to reach anesthetic emergence and post-anesthesia recovery behaviors was recorded for each rat. Postsynaptic density protein-95 (PSD-95), an important scaffolding protein required for synaptic plasticity, protein levels were quantified from hippocampus using western blot. Spontaneous alternation behavior (p = 0.044) and arm entries (p less then 0.001) were decreased in GK rats. There was no difference between groups in emergence times from isoflurane, but exercise hastened the recovery time (p = 0.008) for both Wistar and GK rats. Following 10 days of exercise, both Wistar and GK rats show increased levels of PSD-95 in the hippocampus. In this electroencephalographic study, we compared these two indexes among scalp electrodes. The prepulse was a 10-dB decrease in three consecutive clicks at 30, 40, and 50 ms before the Test onset. Four stimuli (Test alone, Test with Prepulse, Prepulse alone, and background alone) were presented randomly through headphones at an even probability. The results demonstrated that (1) Electrodes at the frontal/central midline were reconfirmed to be suitable to record Change-N1; (2) Change-N1 showed right-hemisphere predominance; (3) There was no difference in the %PPI among regions (prefrontal/frontal/central) and hemispheres (midline/left/right); and (4) the Change-N1 amplitude and its PPI at prefrontal electrodes were positively correlated with those at the frontal electrodes.
