To evaluate the associated risks to organisms and ecosystems more sensitive and accurate strategies are required. The analysis of the microbiome is one of the most promising candidates for environmental diagnosis of aquatic systems. Culture-independent interconnected meta-omic approaches are being increasing used to fill the gaps that classical microbial approaches cannot resolve. Here, we provide a prospective view of the increasing application of these high-throughput molecular technologies to evaluate the structure and functional activity of microbial communities in response to changes and disturbances in the environment, mostly of anthropogenic origin. Some relevant topics are reviewed, such as (i) the use of microorganisms for water quality assessment, highlighting the incidence of antimicrobial resistance as an increasingly serious threat to global public health; (ii) the crucial role of microorganisms and their complex relationships with the ongoing climate change, and other stress threats; (iii) the responses of the environmental microbiome to extreme pollution conditions, such as acid mine drainage or oil spills. Moreover, protists and viruses, due to their huge impacts on the structure of microbial communities, are emerging candidates for the assessment of aquatic environmental health. We aimed to determine the frequency, morphological features, differential diagnosis, possible adverse events of inverted colonic diverticulum (ICD), which may be misdiagnosed as polyps. In all, 810 patients who underwent a colonoscopy between April 2016 and November 2019 were included in the study, and their data were evaluated retrospectively. Colonoscopic procedures were performed at a single center by the same endoscopist. Among all the 810 patients, the prevalence of diverticulum was 29.58% (121/409) in men and 25.19% (n = 101/401) in women, respectively. ICD was observed in 1.73% (n = 14) of all patients, including 11 (78.57%) men (aged 63.2 ± 12.95 years [range 47-90 years]) and three women (60.3 ± 4.04 years [range 58-65 years]). Most (63.16% [12/19]) ICD lesions were localized in the sigmoid colon. And the diagnosis was confirmed by eversion using biopsy forceps in 78.95% of them. Differential diagnosis of ICD is crucial during the colonoscopy.The 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) of National Cancer Institute (NCI) high-risk (HR) B-lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) patients with end of induction (EOI) minimal residual disease (MRD) ≥0.1% and end of consolidation (EOC) MRD ≥0.01% is 39 ± 7%, warranting consideration of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). However, the impact of EOC MRD in NCI standard-risk (SR) B-ALL patients using COG regimens is unknown. We found that SR patients with MRD ≥0.01% at both EOI and EOC have a 4-year DFS/overall survival (OS) of 72.9 ± 19.0%/91.7 ± 10.8% versus 90.7 ± 2.9%/95.5 ± 2.0% (p = .0019/.25) for those with EOI MRD ≥0.01% and EOC MRD less then 0.01%. These data suggest that routine use of HSCT may not be warranted in EOC MRD ≥0.01% SR patients.In CLN3 disease, impairments in motor function are frequently reported to have later onset compared to visual and cognitive decline, but upper limb motor function has yet to be explored in this population. In a cohort of 22 individuals with CLN3, we used a novel application of multiple measures to (1) characterize motor function, particularly of the upper limbs, in activities of daily living (ADLs), and (2) explore associations between motor function and age as well as visual ability, disease severity, and cognitive function, as evaluated by the Unified Batten Disease Rating Scale (UBDRS), a validated CLN3 disease measure. ADLs that required coordination, speed, and fine motor control were particularly challenging for children with CLN3 based on item-level performance across direct assessments (Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test [JTHFT] and MyoSet Tools) and caregiver reports (Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory-Computer Adaptive Testing [PEDI-CAT] and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System [PROMIS] Pediatric Upper Extremity). Poorer visual ability, disease severity, and cognitive function were associated with worse performance on these measures, whereas age had limited impact. These findings support the need for children with CLN3 to receive skilled clinical evaluation and treatment tailored to their individual needs, particularly in the context of ADLs, as their symptom profile progresses.
