The purpose of this study was to characterize patterns of LMN abnormality in nerve-muscle groups that are the potential recipients of NT, using a standardized electrodiagnostic examination, in individuals with chronic SCI (injury duration >2 years, injury levels C4-T1). The LMN abnormality was determined using a semihierarchical approach, combining the amplitude compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and abnormal spontaneous activity on needle electromyography (EMG). The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of COVID-19 among men and women with HIV in Miami, Florida. We hypothesized that the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic will be higher for women, and psychological factors will increase COVID-19 burden among them. People with (n = 231) and without HIV (n = 42) residing in Miami, Florida completed a survey assessing psychological outcomes such as loneliness, depression, and stress, as well as the burden of COVID-19, on their daily lives. t-Tests and chi-square analyses were used to assess sex differences in study variables. Logistic regression was used to compare the interaction effects predicting stress and loneliness by COVID-19 burden and sex. A total of 273 completed the survey; the outcomes of the study, loneliness, and stress did not differ by HIV status (p = .458 and p = .922). Overall, men and women reported similar prevalence of COVID-19 burden. However, a greater proportion of women reported losing childcare than men (18% vs. 9%, p = .029, respectively), as well as losing mental health care (15% vs. 7%, p = .049, respectively). To date, there are no accurate therapeutic approaches for the management of cardiovascular impairments induce by TBI. In this regard, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a novel gasotransmitter, has been proposed as a neuro- and cardioprotective molecule. This study was designed to determine the effect of subchronic management with sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) on hemodynamic, vasopressor sympathetic outflow and sensorimotor alterations produced by TBI. Animals underwent a lateral fluid percussion injury, and changes in hemodynamic variables were measured by pletismographic methods. In addition, vasopressor sympathetic outflow was assessed by a pithed rat model. Last, sensorimotor impairments were evaluated by neuroscore test and beam-walking test. At seven, 14, 21, and 28 days after moderate-severe TBI, the animals showed (1) a decrease on sensorimotor function in the neuroscore test and beam-walking test; (2) an increase in heart rate, systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressure; (3) progressive sympathetic hyperactivity; and (4) a decrease in vasopressor responses induced by noradrenaline (α1/2-adrenoceptors agonist) and UK 14,304 (selective α2-adrenoceptor agonist). Interestingly, intraperitoneal daily injections of NaHS, an H2S donor (3.1 and 5.6 mg/kg), during seven days after TBI prevented the development of the impairments in hemodynamic variables, which were similar to those obtained in sham animals. Moreover, NaHS treatment prevented the sympathetic hyperactivity and decreased noradrenaline-induced vasopressor responses. No effects on sensorimotor dysfunction were observed, however. Taken together, our results suggest that H2S ameliorates the hemodynamic and sympathetic system impairments observed after TBI. Post-marketing data have demonstrated the potential for weight gain with integrase inhibitors (INSTI) use in antiretroviral (ART) therapy. A medical chart review evaluated virologically suppressed adult prisoners living with HIV and on a non-INSTI regimen before switching or adding an INSTI. Primary outcome assessed average weight change; Secondary outcomes evaluated change in body mass index (BMI), fasting lipid panel, and development of hypertension. Statistical analysis included paired t-tests and descriptive statistics. Among 103 study participants, 95% were men with a median age of 44 years. Each INSTI was associated with an average weight increase of 4.3 kg (p < 0.025). Bictegravir and dolutegravir were also associated with significant increases in BMI, +1.4kg/m and +2.8kg/m , respectively (p = 0.011 and p = 0.001). Patients receiving HIV care in a correctional setting and on INSTI-based treatments experienced weight gain and increases in BMI. Future research should focus on the mechanism of development and interventions to prevent weight gain.
