Creative Commons Attribution license.OBJECTIVE We propose a novel automated method called the STransform Gaussian Mixture detection algorithm (SGM) to detect High-Frequency Oscillations (HFO) combining the strengths of different families of previously published detectors. APPROACH This algorithm does not depend on parameter tuning on a subject (or database) basis, uses time-frequency characteristics, and relies on non-supervised classification to determine if the events standing out from the baseline activity are HFO or not. SGM consists of three steps the first stage computes the signal baseline using the entropy of the autocorrelation; the second uses the S-Transform to obtain several time-frequency features (area, entropy, and time and frequency widths); and in the third stage Gaussian mixture models cluster time-frequency features to decide if events correspond to HFO-like activity. To validate the SGM algorithm we tested its performance in simulated and real environments. MAIN RESULTS We assessed the algorithm on a publicly available simulated stereoelectroencephalographic (SEEG) database with varying signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), obtaining very good results for medium and high SNR signals. We further tested the SGM algorithm on real signals from patients with focal epilepsy, in which HFO detection was performed visually by experts, yielding a high agreement between experts and SGM. SIGNIFICANCE The SGM algorithm displayed proper performance in simulated and real environments and therefore can be used for non-supervised detection of HFO. This non-supervised algorithm does not require previous labelling by experts or parameter adjustment depending on the subject or database considered. SGM is not a computationally intensive algorithm, making it suitable to detect and characterize HFO in long-term SEEG recordings. Creative Commons Attribution license.Understanding the electronic transport properties of layered, van der Waals transition metal halides (TMHs) and chalcogenides is a highly active research topic today. Of particular interest is the evolution of those properties with changing thickness as the 2D limit is approached. Here, we present the electrical conductivity of exfoliated single crystals of the TMH, cluster magnet, Nb3Cl8, over a wide range of thicknesses both with and without hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation. The conductivity is found to increase by more than three orders of magnitude when the thickness is decreased from 280 μm to 5 nm, at 300 K. At low temperatures and below ~50 nm, the conductance becomes thickness independent, implying surface conduction is dominating. Temperature dependent conductivity measurements indicate Nb3Cl8 is an insulator, however the effective activation energy decreases from a bulk value of 310 meV to 140 meV by 5nm. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/2-nbdg.html X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows mild surface oxidation in devices without hBN capping, however, no significant difference in transport is observed when compared to the capped devices, implying the thickness dependent transport behavior is intrinsic to the material. Creative Commons Attribution license.We review the screening nature and many-body physics foundation of the van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method [ROPP 78, 066501 (2015)], a systematic approach to construct truly nonlocal exchange-correlation energy density functionals. To that end we define and focus on a class of consistent vdW-DF versions that adhere to the Lindhard screening logic of the full method formulation. The consistent-exchange vdW-DF-cx version [PRB 89, 035412 (2014)] and its spin extension [PRL 115, 136402 (2015)] represent the first examples of this class; In general, consistent vdW-DFs reflect a concerted expansion of a formal recast of the adiabatic-connection formula [PRB 90, 075148 (2014)], an exponential summation of contributions to the local-field response, and the Dyson equation. We argue that the screening emphasis is essential because the exchange-correlation energy reflects an effective electrodynamics set by a long-range interaction. Creative Commons Attribution license.Intestinal displacements including volvulus, torsion and invagination have been reported in various terrestrial and marine mammals. We conducted pathological investigations on 157 seals that had either stranded on the coasts of the North or Baltic Sea between 1996 and 2015 (115 harbour seals, >19 mo old; 21 grey seals, >13 mo old) or died while in human care (18 harbour seals, >19 mo old; 3 grey seals, >13 mo old). Intestinal displacements were found in 23% of the examined free-living harbour seals, in 5% of the stranded grey seals and in 17% of the harbour seals in human care. Intestinal volvulus, found in 24 cases, was characterized by twisting of the intestine along the mesenteric axis (180-540°) resulting in vascular obstruction and haemorrhagic infarction. In harbour seals, the sex ratio of individuals suffering from volvulus tended to be biased towards females during April to June, suggesting an elevated risk for pregnant females around birth time. Invagination was detected in 11 cases, 5 of which suffered from additional volvulus. Pathological findings associated with intestinal volvulus and invagination were sero-haemorrhagic effusions in the abdominal cavity. Enteritis, parasitic infection with gastric nematodes and intestinal acanthocephalans and bacterial infection with predominantly Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli were observed in most of the affected animals. In total, 30 investigated harbour and grey seals suffered from intestinal displacements. Pregnant females seemed to be more vulnerable around birth time. Causes of intestinal displacements remain undetermined, but are likely multifactorial.
