Gross necropsy examination confirmed the congenital cardiac defects, and aortic valve endocarditis was noted on the echocardiogram. Histopathological examination revealed diffuse interstitial pneumonia and evidence for systemic septic embolism including renal infarcts and brain microabscesses.
