Thermal hydrolysis (TH) is an efficient technology for food waste (FW) management. This study investigated the nutrients released from FW under various TH temperature (140, 160, 180, 200 and 220 °C) and evaluated the feasibility of the hydrolyzed liquor (HL) as liquid organic fertilizer. The phytotoxicity and biotoxicity of HL was analyzed using wheat seed and Pseudomonas putida. Results revealed that TH could effectively solubilize FW and release nutrients (N, P and K) and organic substances. The highest content of total nitrogen (TN, 1685 mgN/L) and phosphorus (TP, 235 mgP/L) in the HL was obtained under 180 °C. The K+ was 278-293 mg/L regardless of treatment temperature. Secondary nutrients (Ca and Mg) and micro metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Al, Co and Mn) were all detected at relatively high level, while heavy metals (As and Cd) were generally lower than 0.5 mg/L. Twenty types of free amino acid were identified and the maximum total concentration was 4965.13 mg/L. 2% HL displayed higher germination index (>80%) and enhanced root and shoot lengths. No biotoxicity was observed as confirmed by the bioassay. This study proposes a feasible method to solubilize food waste and produce liquid organic fertilizer.Both indoor unclean fuel use and CVD associates with cognitive function. Indoor fuel has transitioned from the use of unclean fuel to clean fuel in recent years in China. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between adult cognitive function and such a transition and to investigate the potential role of CVD in this association. 7112 participants (26- to 98-years of age) with 12,676 observations living in twelve provinces of China from 1997 to 2015 were extracted based on having complete data. The associations, combined effects, and further mediation effects between indoor unclean fuel use and its transition, CVD, and cognitive function were tested using regression models, stratified analyses, the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), mediation analysis methods, and sensitivity analyses. Between 1997 and 2015, cooking fuel use coal and wood went down a lot in China, from a baseline of 26.9% to 6.1%, from 30.1% to 11.5%, respectively. Such a transition showed a positive association with delayed verbal recall (B = 0.288, p less then 0.01), especially in rural area, subjects with age ≥ 65 years old, and women (all P less then 0.05). The combined effect of the presence of hypertension during a baseline visit and such a transition on changes in delayed verbal recall was antagonistic (RERI = -0.529, p less then 0.05). Moreover, the development of hypertension explained more than 50% of such a fuel transition-related decline of verbal memory. The transition of household energy to clean fuel was associated with a higher adult cognitive function. The presence or the development of CVD appeared to affect the association between indoor air pollution and cognitive function, which suggests a need to further optimize prevention of concurrent CVD and risk factor control in adults at higher risk for cognitive impairment and with indoor unclean cooking fuel, especially in potentially susceptible subgroups.Methylmercury (MeHg) is a globally distributed pollutant that can negatively affect wildlife. Bird feathers are often used as a monitoring tool of contaminant exposure, but variability in total mercury (THg) content in flight feathers has raised concerns over their utility. The objective of this study was to quantify blood and feather THg depuration through the progression of primary feather molt in order to clarify the relationship between blood and feather mercury concentration, and test the reliability of feather THg measurements as a monitoring tool in wild songbirds. Song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) were experimentally exposed to dietary MeHg and their blood and primary feather THg concentrations were measured during exposure and post-exposure periods of three months each. A rapid decrease in feather and blood THg concentration through molt progression was observed. Primary feather THg content was higher in feathers grown during the MeHg exposure period compared to those grown during the post-exposure period. Primary feather THg concentration was highly correlated with blood THg measured at the time of feather growth (R = 0.98), indicating that, although THg concentration is variable among flight feathers, this reflects temporally sequential molting patterns and declining blood concentration during depuration. Primary flight feathers thus provide an accurate and useful tool for estimating the mercury burden of birds at the time a chosen feather was grown, and have the potential to be an effective and reliable biomonitoring tool for species with well-characterized molt patterns.Underlying drivers of species extinctions need to be better understood for effective conservation of biodiversity. Nearly half of all amphibian species are at risk of extinction, and pollution may be a significant threat as seasonal high-level agrochemical use overlaps with critical windows of larval development. The transition and adoption of clean household energy involve various socio-economic, behavioral, and technological barriers at different community levels. Hence, the present paper aims to scrutinize the factors, key determinants, and other interventions among rural households that limit clean cookstoves' sustained uses. The study proposes an integrated model to enhance clean cooking fuel uptake and uses based on the available evidence. The health, climate and environmental factors were identified as the key to trigger the adoption of clean cooking fuel alternatives. The model comprises the integration of components for targeted clean fuel policy interventions and promotes green recovery. The elements include Knowledge, Housing characteristics, Awareness, Interventions, Willingness to pay, Adoption, Lower emissions and Gender Equality (THE KHAIWAL model) to ascertain the intervention focus regions.
