However, their open pond cultures are often contaminated by other undesirable organisms, including their predators. In addition, the cost of using freshwater is relatively high, which limits the location and scale of cultivation compared with using seawater. It was previously shown that Cyanidium caldarium and Galdieria sulphuraria, but not Cyanidioschyzon merolae grew in media containing NaCl at a concentration equivalent to seawater. We found that the preculture of C. merolae in the presence of a moderate NaCl concentration enabled the cells to grow in the seawater-based medium. The cultivation of cyanidialean red algae in the seawater-based medium did not require additional pH buffering chemicals. In addition, the combination of seawater and acidic conditions reduced the risk of contamination by other organisms in the nonsterile open culture of C. merolae more efficiently than the acidic condition alone.Here, we report the systematic studies on photoanodes of phase pure polycrystalline microrods of Barium Stannate (BaSnO3) microrods for application in porphyrin dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). We were able to establish the effect of vacuum annealing on BaSnO3 thin films on its electrical, optical and adsorption properties using XPS, UV-Vis, photoluminescence and adsorption isotherm studies. Increase in oxygen vacancy with annealing is found to increase the room temperature (RT) electron mobility from 49.1 to 82.4 cm2/V sec whereas macroporous nature of samples were found suitable for faster dye adsorption (~ 30 min). Post TiCl4 treatment studies, the maximum efficiency (η) of 4.7% is achieved in BSO films with current density Jsc ~ value as 10.4 mA/cm2; whereas DSSC fabricated using annealed BSO films gave maximum efficiency of 6.1% with Jsc value as 12.2 mA/cm2, during which the value of FF increased from 73.4 to 81%. The IPCE and proposed electron transfer mechanism suggested the potential application of macroporous BSO with unconventional dyes such as metallised-porphyrin. In the present study, we performed both behavioral observations of social relationships within a group of starlings and individual electrophysiological recordings of HVC neuronal activity during the broadcast of either familiar or unfamiliar individual songs. This allowed us to evaluate and compare preferred partnerships and individual electrophysiological profiles. The electrophysiological results revealed asymmetric neuronal activity in the HVC and higher responsiveness to familiar than to unfamiliar songs. However, most importantly, we found a correlation between strength of cerebral asymmetry and social integration in the group the more preferred partners a bird had, the more its HVC neuronal activity was lateralized. Laterality is likely to give advantages in terms of survival. Our results suggest that these include social skill advantages. Observational and modeling studies have demonstrated that ice shelf basal melting, resulting from the inflow of warm water onto the Antarctic continental shelf, plays a key role in the ice sheet's mass balance. In recent decades, warm ocean-cryosphere interaction in the Amundsen and Bellingshausen seas has received a great deal of attention. However, except for Totten Ice Shelf, East Antarctic ice shelves typically have cold ice cavities with low basal melt rates. Here we present direct observational evidence of high basal melt rates (7-16 m yr-1) beneath an East Antarctic ice shelf, Shirase Glacier Tongue, driven by southward-flowing warm water guided by a deep continuous trough extending to the continental slope. The strength of the alongshore wind controls the thickness of the inflowing warm water layer and the rate of basal melting.Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is an aggressive gastrointestinal malignancy with no approved targeted therapy. Here, we analyze exomes (n = 160), transcriptomes (n = 115), and low pass whole genomes (n = 146) from 167 gallbladder cancers (GBCs) from patients in Korea, India and Chile. In addition, we also sequence samples from 39 GBC high-risk patients and detect evidence of early cancer-related genomic lesions. Among the several significantly mutated genes not previously linked to GBC are ETS domain genes ELF3 and EHF, CTNNB1, APC, NSD1, KAT8, STK11 and NFE2L2. A majority of ELF3 alterations are frame-shift mutations that result in several cancer-specific neoantigens that activate T-cells indicating that they are cancer vaccine candidates. In addition, we identify recurrent alterations in KEAP1/NFE2L2 and WNT pathway in GBC. Taken together, these define multiple targetable therapeutic interventions opportunities for GBC treatment and management.Although microbiome-host interactions are usual at steady state, gut microbiota dysbiosis can unbalance the physiological and behavioral parameters of the host, mostly via yet not understood mechanisms. Using the Drosophila model, we investigated the consequences of a gut chronic dysbiosis on the host physiology. Our results show that adult flies chronically infected with the non-pathogenic Erwinia carotorova caotovora bacteria displayed organ degeneration resembling wasting-like phenotypes reminiscent of Metabolic Syndrome associated pathologies. Genetic manipulations demonstrate that a local reduction of insulin signaling consecutive to a peptidoglycan-dependent NF-κB activation in the excretory system of the flies is responsible for several of the observed phenotypes. This work establishes a functional crosstalk between bacteria-derived peptidoglycan and the immune NF-κB cascade that contributes to the onset of metabolic disorders by reducing insulin signal transduction. Giving the high degree of evolutionary conservation of the mechanisms and pathways involved, this study is likely to provide a helpful model to elucidate the contribution of altered intestinal microbiota in triggering human chronic kidney diseases.
