Studies on sex differences in time-series changes in pseudo-R2 values regarding hyperuricemia (HU) in relation to the kidney prognosis among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are scant. The kidney prognosis was evaluated in 200 patients with CKD (median follow-up, 12.3 years). Survival analyses and logistic regression analyses were conducted, generating time-series pseudo-R2 values. We used four definitions of HU according to serum uric acid (SUA) levels (HU6, SUA ≥ 6.0 mg/dL; HU7, SUA ≥ 7.0 mg/dL; HU8, SUA ≥ 8.0 mg/dL) and antihyperuricemic agent use to calculate the mean and percentage of the change in pseudo-R2 values from the 6th year until the end of the study (6Y-End Mean and 6Y-End Change, respectively). The multivariable Cox regression analysis showed that HU7 was significantly associated with kidney outcomes. When stratified by sex, the 6Y-End Mean was clearly higher in women than in men for all HU definitions, with the highest value (0.1755) obtained for HU7 in women. The pseudo-R2 values for HU6 in women showed an increasing pattern, with a 6Y-End Change of 11.4%/year. Thus, it may be clinically meaningful to consider sex differences in the time-series pseudo-R2 values regarding HU and kidney outcomes.High-flow nasal therapy (HFNT) is a unique system that delivers humidified, heated oxygen-enriched air via nasal cannula at high flow rates. It is a promising therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Several studies have examined the physiologic effects of this therapy in the patient population and have revealed that it improves mucociliary clearance, reduces nasopharyngeal dead space, and subsequently increases CO2 washout. It also improves alveolar recruitment and gas exchange. These mechanisms may explain the promising results observed in recently published studies that examined the role of HFNT in stable COPD patients.The Catharanthus roseus plant has been used traditionally to treat diabetes mellitus. Scientific evidence supporting the antidiabetic effects of this plant's active ingredient-vindoline has not been fully evaluated. In this study, extracts of C. roseus and vindoline were tested for antioxidant activities, alpha amylase and alpha glucosidase inhibitory activities and insulin secretory effects in pancreatic RIN-5F cell line cultured in the absence of glucose, at low and high glucose concentrations. The methanolic extract of the plant showed the highest antioxidant activities in addition to the high total polyphenolic content (p less then 0.05). The HPLC results exhibited increased concentration of vindoline in the dichloromethane and the ethylacetate extracts. Vindoline showed noticeable antioxidant activity when compared to ascorbic acid at p less then 0.05 and significantly improved the in vitro insulin secretion. The intracellular reactive oxygen species formation in glucotoxicity-induced cells was significantly reduced following treatment with vindoline, methanolic and the dichloromethane extracts when compared to the high glucose untreated control (p less then 0.05). Plant extracts and vindoline showed weaker inhibitory effects on the activities of carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes when compared to acarbose, which inhibited the activities of the enzymes by 80%. The plant extracts also exhibited weak alpha amylase and alpha glucosidase inhibitory effects.Fescue toxicosis impacts beef cattle production via reductions in weight gain and muscle development. Isoflavone supplementation has displayed potential for mitigating these effects. The objective of the current study was to evaluate isoflavone supplementation with fescue seed consumption on rumen and serum metabolomes. Angus steers (n = 36) were allocated randomly in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments including endophyte-infected (E+) or endophyte-free (E-) tall fescue seed, with (P+) or without (P-) isoflavones. Steers were provided a basal diet with fescue seed for 21 days, while isoflavones were orally administered daily. Following the trial, blood and rumen fluid were collected for metabolite analysis. Metabolites were extracted and then analyzed by UPLC-MS. The MAVEN program was implemented to identify metabolites for MetaboAnalyst 4.0 and SAS 9.4 statistical analysis. Seven differentially abundant metabolites were identified in serum by isoflavone treatment, and eleven metabolites in the rumen due to seed type (p less then 0.05). Pathways affected by treatments were related to amino acid and nucleic acid metabolism in both rumen fluid and serum (p less then 0.05). Therefore, metabolism was altered by fescue seed in the rumen; however, isoflavones altered metabolism systemically to potentially mitigate detrimental effects of seed and improve animal performance.The potential role of wild mammals in the epidemiology of influenza A viruses (IAVs) at the farm-side level has gained increasing consideration over the past two decades. In some instances, select mammals may be more likely to visit riparian areas (both close and distant to farms) as well as poultry farms, as compared to traditional reservoir hosts, such as waterfowl. Of significance, many mammalian species can successfully replicate and shed multiple avian IAVs to high titers without prior virus adaptation and often can shed virus in greater quantities than synanthropic avian species. Within this review, we summarize and discuss the potential risks that synanthropic mammals could pose by trafficking IAVs to poultry operations based on current and historic literature.In the present work, was investigated the separation and purification procedure of the biogenic 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD), which is a well-known valuable compound in terms of bio-based plastic materials development. It was observed that a volume of 84 mL of ethanol 75% loaded with a flow rate of 7 mL/min completely remove the secondary metabolites from 10 mL of concentrated fermented broth, and pure biogenic 1,3-PD was recovered in 128 mL of the eluent.
