At least 27 of those ancestral bony-vertebrate chromosomes can, in some extant species, be shown not to have undergone any fusion or fission events. Such chromosomes are here termed "archeochromosomes," and have each survived essentially unchanged in their content of genes for some 400 Myr. Their utility lies in their potential for tracking the various fusion and fission events that have occurred in different lineages throughout the expansion of bony vertebrates.Significant maternal and child deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) even with existing effective interventions. Antenatal care (ANC), for example, is an intervention that improves the health of pregnant women and their babies, but only 52% of pregnant women in SSA had the recommended minimum of four ANC visits between 2011 and 2016. While significant socioeconomic inequalities in ANC visits have been reported to the disadvantage of the poor, little is known about the depth of ANC coverage and associated inequalities. This paper introduces 'deficits' (i.e. the number of ANC visits that are needed to reach the recommended minimum of four ANC visits) and 'surpluses' (i.e. the number of ANC visits over and above the recommended minimum of four ANC visits) to assess socioeconomic inequalities in the indicator and depth of the 'deficits' and 'surpluses' in ANC visits. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/lipofermata.html Using the latest available Demographic and Health Survey data for 36 SSA countries and concentration indices, the paper found that 'deficits' in ANC visits are more prevalent among poorer women compared to 'surpluses' that are concentrated among the rich. On average, women with 'deficits' in ANC visits require about two more ANC visits to reach the recommended four ANC visits, and women with 'surpluses' exceeded the recommended minimum by about two ANC visits. The factors that explain a substantial share of the socioeconomic inequalities in ANC 'deficits' and 'surpluses' in SSA include wealth, education and area of residency, which are essentially the social determinants of health inequalities. For policy response, it is suggested that education is a significant channel to affect the other social determinants of inequalities in ANC coverage reported in the paper. Thus, countries must prioritize quality education as addressing education, especially among women in SSA, will significantly reduce disparities in ANC service utilization and accelerate progress towards universal health coverage.Non-Saccharomyces yeast species are nowadays recognized for their impact on wine´s chemical composition and sensorial properties. In addition, new interest has been given to the commercial exploitation of non-Saccharomyces starter cultures in the wine sector. However, over many years, these yeast species were considered sources of contamination in wine production and conservation, mainly due to the high levels of volatile acidity obtained. The present manuscript systematizes 80 years of literature describing non-Saccharomyces yeast species isolated from grapes and/or grape musts. A link between each reference, the accepted taxonomic name of each species and their geographical occurrence is presented, compiling information for 293 species, in a total of 231 citations. One major focus of this work relates to the isolation of non-Saccharomyces yeasts from grapevines usually ignored in most sampling studies, also as isolation from damaged grapes. These particular niches are sources of specific yeast species, which are not identified in most other explored environments. These yeasts have high potential to be explored for important and diversified biotechnological applications.Sensory neuronopathies are a rare and distinct subgroup of peripheral neuropathies, characterized by degeneration of the dorsal root ganglia neurons. About 50% of sensory neuronopathies are idiopathic and genetic causes remain to be clarified. Through a combination of homozygosity mapping and whole exome sequencing, we linked an autosomal recessive sensory neuronopathy to pathogenic variants in COX20 gene. We identified 8 unrelated families from the eastern China population carrying a founder variant c.41A>G (p. Lys14Arg) within COX20 in either a homozygous or compound heterozygous state. All patients displayed sensory ataxia with non-length-dependent sensory potentials decrease. COX20 encodes a key transmembrane protein implicated in the assembly of mitochondrial complex IV. We showed that COX20 variants lead to reduction of COX20 protein in patient's fibroblasts and transfected cell lines, consistent with a loss-of-function mechanism. Knockdown of COX20 expression in ND7/23 sensory neuron cells resulted in complex IV deficiency and perturbed assembly of complex IV, which subsequently compromised cell spare respiratory capacity and reduced cell proliferation under metabolic stress. Consistent with mitochondrial dysfunction in knockdown cells, reduced complex IV assembly, enzyme activity and oxygen consumption rate were also found in patients' fibroblasts. We speculated that the mechanism of COX20 was similar to other causative genes (e.g. SURF1, COX6A1, COA3 and SCO2) for peripheral neuropathies, all of which were functionally important in the structure and assembly of complex IV. Our study identifies a novel causative gene for the autosomal recessive sensory neuronopathy, whose vital function in complex IV and high expression in the proprioceptive sensory neuron further underlines loss of COX20 contributing to mitochondrial bioenergetic dysfunction as a mechanism in peripheral sensory neuron disease.Polyploidy has been hypothesized to be both an evolutionary dead-end and a source for evolutionary innovation and species diversification. Although polyploid organisms, especially plants, abound, the apparent nonrandom long-term establishment of genome duplications suggests a link with environmental conditions. Whole-genome duplications seem to correlate with periods of extinction or global change, while polyploids often thrive in harsh or disturbed environments. Evidence is also accumulating that biotic interactions, for instance, with pathogens or mutualists, affect polyploids differently than nonpolyploids. Here, we review recent findings and insights on the effect of both abiotic and biotic stress on polyploids versus nonpolyploids and propose that stress response in general is an important and even determining factor in the establishment and success of polyploidy.
