The MLS databases contain essential information about properties, including listing prices, square footage, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, and other important details. The MLS is used by both real estate agents and home buyers. While it may seem like the MLS is an invention of our modern technological world, the concept dates back to the late 1800s. According to the National Association of Realtors(r), real estate brokers would gather together and swap information about properties they had for sale, in hopes of connecting with buyers. These brokers would compensate each other when a sale was made. was first used in 1907 to describe this practice. Nowadays, each local MLS has its own rules and regulations that dictate how brokers must share and sell property information.
