Discharge plasma technology is a new advanced oxidation technology for water treatment, which includes the effects of free radical oxidation, high energy electron radiation, ultraviolet light hydrolysis, and pyrolysis. In order to improve the energy efficiency in the plasma discharge processes, many efforts have been made to combine catalysts with discharge plasma technology. Some heterogeneous catalysts (e.g., activated carbon, zeolite, TiO2) and homogeneous catalysts (e.g., Fe2+/Fe3+, etc.) have been used to enhance the removal of pollutants by discharge plasma. In addition, some reagents of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) such as persulfate and percarbonate are also discussed. This article introduces the research progress of the combined systems of discharge plasma and catalysts/oxidants, and explains the different reaction mechanisms. In addition, physical and chemical changes in the plasma catalytic oxidation system, such as the effect of the discharge process on the catalyst, and the changes in the discharge state and solution conditions caused by the catalysts/oxidants, were also investigated. At the same time, the potential advantages of this system in the treatment of different organic wastewater were briefly reviewed, covering the degradation of phenolic pollutants, dyes, and pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Finally, some suggestions for future water treatment technology of discharge plasma are put forward. This review aims to provide researchers with a deeper understanding of plasma catalytic oxidation system and looks forward to further development of its application in water treatment.There is a delayed (lag 1 to 2 days) correlation between acute PM 2.5 (particulate matter 35.4 μg/m3) or low ( less then 35.4 μg/m3) PM 2.5 groups according to their PM 2.5 exposures on the day of Holter recordings (day 0) lag 1 and lag 2 days. Linear and nonlinear HRV parameters〔Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) slopes 1 and 2〕were compared. Baseline characteristics were similar between groups. Linear and nonlinear HRV parameters were similar between high- and low-exposure groups on day 0 and lag 1 day, respectively. However, DFA slope 1 was significantly lower in the high-exposure group on lag 2 days (0.784 ± 0.201 vs. 0.964 ± 0.274, p = 0.021). DFA slope 1 of the high-exposure group was significantly lower on daytime periods (9 am to 9 pm, 8 am to 4 pm and 4 pm to 12 pm) but not on nighttime periods. High lag 2 days PM 2.5 exposure is associated with low DFA slope 1 and the relationship is diurnal. This suggests that air pollution might have a delayed impact on the cardiovascular autonomic system.Lead (Pb) is a kind of widespread toxic environmental pollutant which can cause harm to organisms. Selenium (Se) has the property of mitigating Pb toxicity through decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation caused by Pb. Nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, and pyrin-domain containing-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome involve in inflammation process. However, the effect of NLRP3 inflammasome in heavy metal-caused animal damage remains unknown. This research aimed to explore the mechanism of mitigative role of Se on Pb-caused renal inflammatory injury in chickens. One-week-old male chickens were provided a standard diet and drinking water, a standard diet added with 1 mg kg-1 of Se and drinking water, a standard diet and drinking water added with 350 mg L-1 Pb, and a standard diet added with 1 mg kg-1 Se and drinking water added with 350 mg L-1 Pb. On the 4th, 8th, and 12th weeks, serum was used to measure creatinine (CREA) and uric acid (UA) contents, and kidneys were used to measure Se and Pb concentrations, histological structure, oxidative stress indicators, relative expressions of cytokines, and inflammatory factors. The results showed that Pb accumulated, Se concentration decreased, CREA and UA contents increased, and renal injury occurred in Pb-treated chicken kidneys. https://www.selleckchem.com/ Excess Pb increased MDA content and the expressions of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17, NLRP3, caspase-1, NF-κB, COX-2, TNF-α, and PTGEs and decreased GSH content, GPx and SOD activities, and IFN-γ expression in the chicken kidneys. Se administration alleviated the aforementioned changes. In addition, toxic effect of Pb on the chicken kidneys was time-dependent. NLRP3 inflammasome, caspase-1, and IL-1β may be sensitive indicators in Pb-induced chicken kidney inflammatory damage. In conclusion, NLRP3 inflammasome took part in antagonistic role of Se against Pb-caused inflammation via changing oxidative stress indicators, cytokines, and inflammation-related genes in the chicken kidneys.High temperature environment causes reduction in productivity in broilers by disrupting the intestinal barrier function. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of dietary betaine on intestinal barrier function and cecal microbial community in indigenous broilers (Huaixiang chickens) exposed to high temperature environment. A total of 144 5-week-old male broilers (average initial body weight of 401.62 ± 9.51 g) were randomly allocated to three treatments for 10 weeks feeding trial; each treatment contained six replicates with eight birds per replicate. The three treatments included normal temperature control group (NT, fed basal diet, 26 ± 1 °C), high temperature control group (HT, fed basal diet, 32 ± 1 °C for 8 h/day), and HT group supplemented 1000 mg/kg betaine (HTB). The results showed that high temperature environment reduced the Occludin, Claudin-4, and ZO-1 expressions in duodenal mucosa (P less then 0.05). Dietary betaine improved the Claudin-4 and ZO-1 expressions of duodenal mucosa (P less then 0.05). In jejunal mucosa, HT group had lower Occludin, Claudin-1, Claudin-4, and ZO-1 expressions than NT group (P less then 0.05). Compared with HT group, HTB group had higher Occludin and ZO-1 expression (P less then 0.05). In ileal mucosa, the relative mRNA expression of ZO-1 in HT group was lower than those in NT group (P less then 0.01), and dietary betaine (HTB group) improved ZO-1 expression compared with HT group (P less then 0.05). Based on the results of 16S rRNA sequencing, the enriched and dominant microbials in NT group are Epsilonbacteraeota, Bacteroidetes, and Gammaproteobacterial, the enriched and dominant microbial in HT group is Muribaculaceae, and Firmicutes is the enriched and dominant microbial in HTB group. Taken together, the findings revealed that dietary betaine improved the intestinal barrier function and cecal microbial community in indigenous broilers under high ambient temperature.
