Biofiltration technology is a feasible, low-cost, energy-saving method that reduces and eliminates malodors without environmental impact. In the present study, we evaluated the effectiveness of compost from cattle manure and food waste as deodorizing media based on their removal of ammonia and the expression of ammonia-oxidizing genes, and identified the bacterial and archaeal communities in these media. Ammonia was removed by cattle manure compost, but not by food waste compost. The next-generation sequencing of 16S ribosomal RNA obtained from cattle manure compost revealed the presence of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), including Cytophagia, Alphaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria, and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), such as Thaumarchaeota. In cattle manure compost, the bacterial and archaeal ammonia monooxygenase A (amoA) genes were both up-regulated after exposure to ammonia (fold ratio of 14.2±11.8 after/before), and the bacterial and archaeal communities were more homologous after than before exposure to ammonia, which indicates the adaptation of these communities to ammonia. These results suggest the potential of cattle manure compost as an efficient biological deodorization medium due to the activation of ammonia-oxidizing microbes, such as AOB and AOA, and the up-regulation of their amoA genes.Sitosterolemia is an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by increased levels of plant sterols, such as sitosterol. This disease is caused by loss-of-function genetic mutations in ATP-binding cassette (ABC) subfamily G member 5 or member 8 (ABCG5 or ABCG8, respectively), both of which play important roles in selective excretion of plant sterols from the liver and intestine, leading to failure to prevent absorption of food plant sterols. This disorder has been considered to be extremely rare. However, accumulated clinical data as well as genetics suggest the possibility of a much higher prevalence. Its clinical manifestations resemble those observed in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), including tendon xanthomas, hyper LDL-cholesterolemia, and premature coronary atherosclerosis. To assess the results of a phase I/IIa open-label dose-escalation clinical trial of 5-day repeated intramuscular administration of pitavastatin-incorporated poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (NK-104-NP) in patients with chronic limb threatening ischemia (CLTI). NK-104-NP was formulated using an emulsion solvent diffusion method. NK-104-NP at four doses (nanoparticles containing 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mg of pitavastatin calcium, n=4 patients per dose) was investigated in a dose-escalation manner and administered intramuscularly into the ischemic limbs of 16 patients with CLTI. The safety and therapeutic efficacy of treatment were investigated over a 26-week follow-up period. No cardiovascular or other serious adverse events caused by NK-104-NP were detected during the follow-up period. Improvements in Fontaine and Rutherford classifications were noted in five patients (one, three, and one in the 1-, 2-, and 4-mg dose groups, respectively). Pharmacokinetic parameters including the maximum serum concentration and the area under the blood concentration-time curve increased with pitavastatin treatment in a dose-dependent manner. The area under the curve was slightly increased at day 5 compared with that at day 1 of treatment, although the difference was not statistically significant. This is the first clinical trial of pitavastatin-incorporated nanoparticles in patients with CLTI. As family members share not only genes but also their diet habit, parents' salt intake may affect to their children's obesity. In this study, we investigated correlations between childhood obesity and parents' or children's sodium intakes based on a nationwide survey data. From the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2014 to 2017, 802 boys and 657 girls aged 10-18 years, and their parents were included. BMI z-score and 24-hour urinary sodium excretion, which is estimated through Tanaka's equation, were used to examine associations between obesity and sodium intakes. The BMI status and the prevalence of obesity between children and their parents showed strong positive correlations in both sexes (all p less then 0.001). The urinary sodium excretion between children and their parents showed positive correlations in both sexes (all p less then 0.05). Children with higher urinary sodium excretion showed higher BMI (in both sexes, p less then 0.001) and higher parental obesity compared to those with lower urinary sodium excretion, however, statistical significances of the latter relationship were varied by sex. In conclusion, our study suggests close relationship between childhood obesity and their sodium intakes, which also correlate well with parental BMIs and diet behavior. Therefore, parental education and active participation could be crucial in regulating childhood obesity.
