Emergency care systems (ECS) are undergoing a period of rapid development on the African continent. What were formerly large intake zones are now being shaped into dedicated emergency units. Emergency care providers are being trained via certificate and even residency programs. However, significant challenges still exist. Resource limitations, staffing, and other system inputs are often the easiest issues to identify, but they only account for part of the problem. There are other prominent barriers to the delivery of high quality emergency care including lack of governmental leadership, poor system and facility organization, lack of provider training, and community misunderstanding of ECS functions. Released in May 2019, World Health Assembly (WHA) 72 resolution 12.9 "Emergency care systems for universal health coverage ensuring timely care for the acutely ill and injured" has squarely placed ECS strengthening as a priority item to member state governments. Moving forward, it will be important to ensure that these systems are set up for success, as high-quality emergency care systems have the potential to avert half of all deaths in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). With momentum building from the recent WHA amendment and the health systems community more focused than ever on the consideration of quality in health systems design, it is of the utmost importance that ECS planners dovetail these interests such that these nascent systems are designed while 1) applying a systems thinking lens and 2) maintaining a focus on quality. This article helps to accomplish this by breaking down ECS into five major categories for evaluation as defined by the WHO Emergency Care Systems Assessment tool, providing an understanding of the functions of each, and identifying which indicators might be used to gauge performance. We also reinforce the notion that these indicators must dive deeper than system inputs and health outcomes, they must be patient centered in order to truly be reflective of success. Advanced life support (ALS) short training courses are in demand across Africa, though overwhelmingly designed and priced for non-African contexts. The continental expansion of emergency care is driving wider penetration of these courses, but their relevance and accessibility is not known. We surveyed clinicians within emergency settings to describe ALS courses' prevalence and perceived value in Africa. We conducted a cross-sectional quantitative analysis of 235 clinicians' responses to the African Federation for Emergency Medicine's online needs assessment for an open-access ALS course in Africa. Participants responded to multiple-choice and open answer questions assessing demographics, ALS course certification and availability, perceptions of ALS courses, and barriers and facilitators to undertaking such courses. 235 clinicians working in 23 African nations responded. Most clinicians reported ALS course completion within the past three years (73%) and in-country access to ALS courses (76%). Most belie tailored to lower-resource African settings that could reach rural and peri-urban clinicians.Emergency Medicine (EM) development is established worldwide and fast developing in Sub-Saharan Africa. Medical specialty development requires multiple human resources and logistics which are frequently not available in LMICs. This article describes an innovative hybrid EM specialization program in Botswana that involved partnership with a neighbouring country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Many initial problems challenged its development, but significant local and regional support led to success. Botswana graduated its first three EM specialists in 2018 and now has an ongoing and sustainable EM program. This regional partnership resulted in numerous academic, research and clinical EM developments for Botswana and SA. UB-UCT EM training Partnership Model is a novel and sustainable cross- African collaboration with significant benefits for both health systems as well as for the individual trainees. This hybrid arrangement should be considered by other LMICs looking for EM specialty training and development.Emergency care is in its nascency in most of the world and emergency health systems are developing throughout Africa, including Ethiopia. The goals of the directorate are discussed as well as their role in the development of the national integrated emergency medicine curriculum. Recently, the WHO and Ministry of Health-Ethiopia have been working together to roll out an integrated emergency care system development agenda throughout the country bolstered by the recent passing of a world health assembly resolution to strengthen emergency care co-led by Ethiopia. With all the successes of Ethiopia in increasing human resources there have been both triumphs and challenges. The development of human resources for emergency care systems in Ethiopia provides insights and lessons learned to other nations on a similar pathway of strengthening emergency care systems. Injuries remain a leading cause of death in many developing countries, accounting for more deaths than HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. This study set out to determine the associated patient costs of reported injury cases at the Accident and Emergency Department of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra, Ghana. A cross-sectional retrospective Cost-of-Illness study of 301 sampled patients was undertaken, following a review of injured patients' records from January-December 2016. Direct cost, (consisting of consultation, surgery, medicines, transportation, property damage, food and consumables) was estimated. Indirect cost was calculated using the Human capital approach. Intangible cost was assessed using Likert scale analysis. The overall household cost, average cost of various injuries and intangible costs were determined. The total annual household cost of injuries to patients who attended KBTH was US$11,327,461.96, of which 82% was the direct cost. The average household cost of injuries was US$ 1276.
