A new mealybug species Atrococcus rushuiensis Zhang, sp. nov., collected under the leaf sheath of Sporobolus fertilis (Poaceae) in Fuzhou City, Jiangxi Province, China, is described and illustrated. A new combination is introduced, transferring Allotrionymus shanxiensis Wu to the genus Atrococcus as A. shanxiensis (Wu), comb. nov. A key is presented for the species of Atrococcus recorded from China.Recent surveys of Oahu's Waianae Mountains uncovered a small, previously undescribed species of Auriculella that is conchologically similar to the three members of the A. perpusilla group all of which are endemic to the Koolau Mountain Range. However, sequence data demonstrate that the perpusilla group is not monophyletic. Moreover, the new species is not closely related to A. perpusilla or A. perversa, the only extant members of the group, but instead is sister to A. tenella, a species from the high spired A. castanea group. A neotype is designated for A. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/FK-506-(Tacrolimus).html auricula, the type species of Auriculella; all members of the conchologically similar perpusilla group are anatomically redescribed; and lectotypes designated for A. minuta, A. perversa, and A. tenella. The new species is described and compared to the type of the genus, members of the perpusilla group, and the genetically similar species A. tenella.X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a neurodegenerative peroxisomal disorder with variable clinical phenotypes. Childhood cerebral ALD (CCALD) is at the most severe end of the disease spectrum. In CCALD, the clinical manifestations include increasing deficits in behavior, vision, hearing, coordination, and motor function, as well as seizures. Without treatment, CCALD often results in apparent vegetative state within 1 to 2 years of appearance of initial signs and symptoms. We present the case of a boy with classic inflammatory CCALD who exhibited spontaneous attenuation in disease progression. While extremely rare, spontaneous arrest of disease progression may occur in boys with inflammatory CCALD.This multicenter, longitudinal, descriptive, observational study of T2DM adults in Thailand aimed to assess real-world outcomes of basal insulin (BI) dose titration on glycemic control. Three-hundred and twenty-four patients were recruited and followed up over 24 weeks. Basal insulin titration was physician-driven in 58.2% of patients and patient-driven in the rest. During the 24-week study period, the total daily BI dose moved from 20.9 to 25.6 in the physician-driven group, while in the patient-driven group, it increased from 25.3 to 29.7. Thirty-five patients (11.2%) achieved their individualized HbA1c targets, with 18 patients (5.8%) achieving HbA1c ⩽ 7% without documented hypoglycemia. In summary, this study highlights that BI titration is suboptimal in the real world, and patients are unable to achieve their glycemic targets. Reduced-fluence photodynamic therapy (RFPDT) has proven effective for some patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (cCSC). Several clinicodemographic factors influencing treatment response have been identified, but associations with genetic factors have not been examined. Therefore, we investigated the associations of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) implicated in cCSC pathogenesis with clinical outcome following RFPDT. This was a retrospective study of 87 eyes from 87 patients with cCSC who underwent RFPDT and were followed up for more than 12 months. Patients were divided into a good response group (53 patients) and a poor response group (34 patients) based on either persistence or recurrence of subretinal fluid detected with spectral domain optical coherence tomography after the first application of RFPDT. SNPs in the genes encoding age-related maculopathy susceptibility protein 2 ( , SNP rs10490924) and complement factor H ( , SNP rs800292) were genotyped using TaqMan technologylele (GT or TT) demonstrated a higher subretinal fluid persistence or recurrence rate and poorer visual outcome following RFPDT. In addition to the ICGA findings, genotyping of (rs10490924) may assist in the selection of patients with cCSC most likely to benefit from RFPDT. Carriers of the ARMS2 rs10490924 minor allele (GT or TT) demonstrated a higher subretinal fluid persistence or recurrence rate and poorer visual outcome following RFPDT. In addition to the ICGA findings, genotyping of ARMS2 (rs10490924) may assist in the selection of patients with cCSC most likely to benefit from RFPDT.Urbanization induced habitat loss and alteration causes significant challenges for the survival of many species. Identifying how species respond to urbanization can yield insights for the conservation of wildlife, but research on reptiles has been narrowly-focused. We compared morphology among four populations of western fence lizards (Sceloporus occidentalis) to determine whether a common native species affected by urbanization exhibits morphological differences consistent with habitat use. We quantified habitat differences across four sites in Los Angeles County, California, USA that varied in level of urbanization, measured how lizards used microhabitats, and assessed variation in body size, limb length, toe length, and scalation of lizards collected from each site. Urban and suburban populations of fence lizards mostly used human-made substrates while lizards from more natural areas mostly used natural woody substrates. Lizards from the most urban site also exhibited the widest breadth of substrates used, indicating that urban sites might offer more variable microhabitats. Urban lizards had reduced limb lengths and toe lengths consistent with how they used microhabitats and other habitat characteristics (e.g., percent impervious surface cover). Urban lizards also had fewer dorsal scales, which might be associated with changes in ambient temperature (e.g., urban heat island effect), given that lizards with fewer and larger scales typically have reduced evaporative water loss. Our results uniquely differ from past studies on lizard responses to urbanization, indicating that work on diverse taxa is necessary to assess the potential varied pathways of morphological adaptations to urban environments.
