WBRT was associated with improved median OS (8.0 months, range 1.4-62.3 months) compared with supportive care only (3.3 months, range 0.7-18.3 months) (HR 0.39, 95% CI 0.20-0.75, p = 0.005). Among patients who received WBRT, higher radiation dose to the whole brain was not associated with survival (p = 0.10), but higher radiation dose to the gross tumor was associated with improved survival (p = 0.007). CONCLUSION Patients with PCNSL who are ineligible for systemic therapy may still benefit from WBRT with improvement in survival, compared with the best supportive care. Dose escalation through the addition of a gross tumor boost in these patients was associated with improved overall survival. Further studies in the prospective setting are necessary to confirm the findings from the study.PURPOSE This study examined the Sense of Coherence (SOC) of patients participating in the randomized controlled 'Optimal Training for Women with Breast Cancer' (OptiTrain) study and assessed how patient characteristics were associated with SOC. Secondary aims were to assess the association between SOC and patients' participation in this study and to determine whether SOC moderates the effect of the 16-week exercise intervention on fatigue, quality of life (QoL), and symptom burden in women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS Modified Poisson regression analyses were conducted to determine the relative risk of weak-normal SOC versus strong SOC in terms of exercise session attendance, study and intervention dropout, and long absence rates. Women with strong SOC reported less fatigue, lower symptom burden, and higher QoL. Women with weak-normal SOC may need additional support to encourage participation and adherence in exercise trials. Assessing SOC may assist clinicians to identify and provide extra support for participants with weak SOC, who may be less inclined to participate in exercise programs.Gamers represent themselves in online gaming worlds through their avatars. The term "Proteus Effect" (PE) defines the potential influences of the gamers' avatars on their demeanour, perception and conduct and has been linked with excessive gaming. There is a significant lack of knowledge regarding likely distinct PE profiles and whether these could be differentially implicated with disordered gaming. A normative group of 1022 World of Warcraft (WoW) gamers were assessed in the present study (Mean age = 28.60 years). The Proteus Effect Scale (PES) was used to evaluate the possible avatar effect on gamers' conduct, and the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short-Form was used to examine gaming disorder behaviors. Latent class profiling resulted in three distinct PE classes, 'non-influenced-gamers' (NIGs), 'perception-cognition-influenced-gamers' (PCIGs), and 'emotion-behaviour-influenced-gamers' (EBIGs). The NIGs reported low rates across all PES items. The PCIGs indicated higher avatar influence in their perception-experience but did not report being affected emotionally. The EBIGs indicated significantly higher avatar influence in their emotion and behaviour than the other two classes but reported stability in their perception of aspects independent of their avatar. Gaming disorder behaviours were reduced for the NIGs and progressively increased for the PCIGs and the EBIGs.Estrus identification is important in dairy cow production. At present, estrus identification is automated with a pedometer or accelerometer and the results remain unsatisfactory. It was previously reported that body temperature changes during estrus. In the present study, dairy cow vaginal temperature (VT) was monitored during various seasons, and an increase in VT of 0.3 °C was suggested for the onset of estrus, using an automated VT monitoring system developed in-house. Natural and synchronized estrus were measured simultaneously. The VT was determined to be in circadian rhythm and significantly higher in summer than in either autumn or winter (P less then 0.05). VT difference (between estrus VT and average VT 7 days earlier) gradually increased, reached a peak of 0.56 °C ± 0.17 at 4 h before the end of estrus, and then decreased to the normal. The VT of cows in estrus and the duration of their estrus were significantly affected by seasons and estrus types (P less then 0.05). VT gradually decreased in response to prostaglandin (PG) injection and was significantly lower (0.15-0.35 °C) from 9 to 33 h after the drug administration than the average VT at the same time 7 days earlier (P less then 0.05). Changes in circadian and seasonal VT and in the estrous cycle can be monitored to assess the physiological status of cows and will help in developing an effective automated estrus identification technique. Results of this pilot study should be validated in further studies.In eukaryotes, chromosome ends (telomeres) are tethered to the inner nuclear membrane. During the early stages of meiosis, telomeres move along the nuclear membrane and gather near the spindle-pole body, resulting in a bouquet-like arrangement of chromosomes. This chromosomal configuration appears to be widely conserved among eukaryotes, and is assumed to play an important role in the normal progression of meiosis, by mediating the proper pairing of homologous chromosomes. In fission yeast, the Bqt1-Bqt2 protein complex plays a key role in tethering the telomere to the inner nuclear membrane. However, the structural details of the complex required to clarify how telomeres are gathered near the spindle-pole body remain enigmatic. Previously, we devised a preparation procedure for the Schizosaccharomyces japonicus Bqt1-Bqt2 complex, in which a SUMO tag was fused to the N-terminus of the Bqt1 protein. This allowed us to purify the Bqt1-Bqt2 complex from the soluble fraction. In the present study, we found that a maltose-binding protein homolog, Athe_0614, served as a better fusion partner than the SUMO protein, resulting in the marked increase in the solubility of the Bqt1-Bqt2 complex.
