The Academies have been active for a long time in helping those interested in science comprehend the theory of evolution and how it influences every area of scientific inquiry. This site provides a range of tools for students, teachers and general readers of evolution. It also includes important video clips from NOVA and WGBH produced science programs on DVD. Tree of Life The Tree of Life, an ancient symbol, symbolizes the interconnectedness of all life. It is used in many spiritual traditions and cultures as symbolizing unity and love. It also has practical applications, such as providing a framework to understand the evolution of species and how they respond to changes in the environment. The earliest attempts to depict the world of biology focused on separating organisms into distinct categories that were identified by their physical and metabolic characteristics1. These methods, which depend on the collection of various parts of organisms or short DNA fragments, have greatly increased the diversity of a Tree of Life2. However these trees are mainly made up of eukaryotes. Bacterial diversity remains vastly underrepresented3,4. By avoiding the necessity for direct observation and experimentation genetic techniques have allowed us to represent the Tree of Life in a more precise manner. We can construct trees by using molecular methods such as the small subunit ribosomal gene. The Tree of Life has been significantly expanded by genome sequencing. However there is still a lot of diversity to be discovered. This is particularly true for microorganisms, which are difficult to cultivate and are typically only present in a single specimen5. A recent analysis of all genomes that are known has produced a rough draft of the Tree of Life, including numerous bacteria and archaea that have no
