To examine the substitution characteristics during official matches and the physical match performances of Japanese top-level futsal players in different categories and playing positions. Speed and total distance covered were analysed for the in-play time. The in-play time was categorized based on the teams' ball possession status. The average total playing time per substitution was significantly higher in the youth (6.2 ± 2.1 min) than in the adult players (3.8 ± 1.1 min; p less then 0.05). Furthermore, the proportion of high intensity exercise during matches was significantly higher in adults (43.2 ± 5.2%) than in youth players (37.2 ± 5.4%; p less then 0.05). There was no significant difference in the average total distance covered between different playing positions. However, the average total distance covered with ball possession by Pivot (140 ± 15 m/min) was significantly lower than that by Winger (151 ± 15 m/min; p less then 0.05) in adult players. Furthermore, the proportion of high intensity exercise without ball possession as Defender (36.7 ± 6.1%) was lower than that as Winger (41.9 ± 6.1%; p less then 0.05) in adults but not in the youth players. Adult futsal players have higher physiological demands than youth players. The physical match performances vary between playing positions with or without ball possession. These results could be useful for youth development and position-specific training information.The aim of this study was to examine the concurrent validity of the Kinexon local positioning system (LPS) in comparison with the Vicon motion capture system used as the reference. Five recreationally active men performed ten repetitions of linear sprints, medio-lateral side-to-side and handball-specific movements both in the centre and on the side of an indoor field. Validity was assessed for peak speed, peak acceleration and peak deceleration using standardised biases, Pearson coefficient of correlation (r), and standardised typical error of the estimate. With the exception of peak decelerations during specific movements in the centre and peak acceleration and deceleration during linear sprints on the side of the field, the standardised typical error of the estimate (TEE) values were all small to moderate (0.06-0.48), standardised bias ranged between 0.01 and 2.85 and Pearson coefficient values were all > 0.90 for all variables in all conditions. Peak acceleration and deceleration during linear sprints on the side of the field showed the largest TEEs and the greatest differences between the two systems. The ultra-wideband based (UWB) local positioning system had acceptable validity compared with Vicon to assess players' movements in handball with the exception of high accelerations and decelerations during linear sprints on the side of the field.This study investigated the post-activation performance enhancements (PAPE) induced by a high-intensity single set of accentuated eccentric isoinertial resistance exercise on vertical jump performance. Twenty physically active male university students performed, in randomized counterbalanced order, two different conditioning activities (CA) after a general preestablished warm-up a conditioning set of 6 maximum repetitions at high intensity (i.e., individualized optimal moment of inertia [0.083 ± 0.03 kg·m-2]) of the flywheel half-squat exercise in the experimental condition, or a set of 6 maximal countermovement jumps (CMJ) instead of the flywheel exercise in the control condition. CMJ height, CMJ concentric peak power and CMJ concentric peak velocity were assessed at baseline (i.e., 3 minutes after the warm-up) and 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 minutes after the CA in both experimental and control protocols. Only after the experimental protocol were significant gains in vertical jump performance (p less then 0.05, ES range 0.10-1.34) at 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 minutes after the CA observed. In fact, the experimental protocol showed greater (p less then 0.05) CMJ height, concentric peak power and concentric peak velocity enhancements compared to the control condition. In conclusion, a single set of high-intensity flywheel training led to PAPE in CMJ performance after 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 minutes in physically active young men.The aim of this study was to compare the effects of resistance training to muscle failure (RT-F) and non-failure (RT-NF) on muscle mass, strength and activation of trained individuals. We also compared the effects of these protocols on muscle architecture parameters. A within-subjects design was used in which 14 participants had one leg randomly assigned to RT-F and the other to RT-NF. Each leg was trained 2 days per week for 10 weeks. Vastus lateralis (VL) muscle cross-sectional area (CSA), pennation angle (PA), fascicle length (FL) and 1-repetition maximum (1-RM) were assessed at baseline (Pre) and after 20 sessions (Post). The electromyographic signal (EMG) was assessed after the training period. RT-F and RT-NF protocols showed significant and similar increases in CSA (RT-F 13.5% and RT-NF 18.1%; P 0.05). In conclusion, RT-F and RT-NF are similarly effective in promoting increases in muscle mass, PA, FL, strength and activation.The objective of this research was to compare the effect of Post-Activation Performance Enhancement (PAPE) exerted on the back squat (BS) versus the barbell hip thrust (HT) on the sprint performance (5- and 10-m). 17 male amateur rugby players participated in the study (age 22.14 ± 2.52 years; body mass 81.06 ± 9.6 kg; height 1.78 ± 0.05 m). All participants performed a dynamic maximum strength test (3RM) in BS and HT at maximum speed. Two randomized sessions were performed inducing PAPE using BS or HT trough three series with three repetitions at 85% 1RM eight minutes before the sprint tests.
