Drought stress poses a severe threat to grain yield in rice. Our previous report demonstrated the role of OsJAZ9 in potassium homeostasis by modulating Jasmonic Acid (JA) signalling. While both potassium (K) and JA are known to have an important role in drought stress response, JA's repressor, i.e., JAZs' role in drought stress, remains elusive. Here we report that OsJAZ9 plays a critical role in rice water-deficit stress tolerance via influencing JA and ABA signalling. Overexpression of OsJAZ9 led to the enhanced ABA and JA levels. Our data further revealed that exogenous JA application antagonises the ABA-mediated inhibition of seed germination. Further, OsJAZ9 overexpression reduces leaf width and stomata density, leading to lower leaf transpiration rates than WT. This reduced transpiration and higher K content as osmoticum improved the water-deficit stress tolerance in OsJAZ9 overexpression lines. On the contrary, OsJAZ9 RNAi lines displayed enhanced sensitivity towards water-deficit stress. Our data provide new insights on the role of JA signalling repressors in rice response to water-deficit stress.Nitrogen (N) deposition affects plant growth and interspecific interaction. This study aimed to explore the effect of N deposition on the growth and eco-physiological interactions between two tree species dominating in subtropical forests. A greenhouse experiment was conducted for 6 months in which the conifer Cunninghamia lanceolata and the broadleaved Phoebe chekiangensis were grown in monocultures and in a mixture under two levels of N addition 0 and 45 kg ha-1 yr-1. The plant growth, root architecture, biomass distribution, element contents in plants and soil, and photosynthetic physiology were determined. The height and crown width of both seedlings tended to be higher in the mixture than in the monoculture when grown without N addition. P. chekiangensis was superior to C. lanceolata in resource acquisition and showed a greater net photosynthetic rate, plant height, crown width, total biomass, and belowground biomass distribution. In the mixture, N addition increased the net photosynthetic rate and decreased the height, ground diameter, and crown width of both species. Belowground biomass distribution was decreased in C. lanceolata but increased in P. chekiangensis under N addition. The P contents in both seedlings were higher in the mixture than in monocultures. Previous research shows that adolescent prescription opioid misuse is strongly associated with weapon carrying. For this research, data from the nationally representative 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey were analyzed. Average marginal predictions were estimated for gun and weapon carrying as a function of prescription opioid misuse and sex. As per STROBE guidelines, additive interactions with risk differences-in addition to multiplicative interactions with odds ratios and risk ratios-were estimated to investigate sex disparities in the effects of prescription opioid misuse on gun and other weapon-carrying. Male US high school students who misused prescription opioids had an especially high prevalence of gun and other weapon carrying. Additive interactions show significantly greater risk differences associated with prescription opioid misuse among male students compared to female students for gun carrying, weapon carrying, and weapon carrying at school. In contrast, multiplicative interactions show lower odds ratios and risk ratios among male students for these same weapon-carrying variables. Little is known about trends in overdose behaviors. This study explored non-fatal overdose and engagement in overdose prevention behaviors and compared these trends to city-wide overdose fatality rates from 2017 to 2019 in Baltimore, MD. The analysis included people who used opioids (PWUO; N = 502) recruited through a community-based study. Enrollment date was used to categorize participants into annual quarters. Logistic regression models examined change in overdose experiences and prevention behaviors with time. Baltimore's fatal overdoses were also mapped over the study period to assess overlaps in trends. The majority of the sample were male(68 %), Black(61 %), reported past 6 months homelessness(56 %), and were on average 45 years old. Most had witnessed(61 %), and 28 % had personally experienced an overdose in the past 6 months. Witnessing overdose marginally increased(aβ = 0.182;p = 0.058) while experiencing overdose did not significantly change by enrollment quarter. Most participants had or had overdose. Overdose prevention behaviors significantly increased over time. Despite reporting having naloxone or a naloxone prescription, most PWUO did not regularly carry naloxone, and many used alone. Social network diffusion interventions may be a strategy to promote normative overdose prevention behaviors.Awareness of microplastic pollution in aquatic environments increased strongly during the last decade. Environmental monitoring studies detected microplastic items in every tested water body and found them in various aquatic organisms. Yet, many studies conducted so far, refer to microplastic particles and spheres but not fibers. Microplastic fibers are often not considered due to methodological issues and high contamination risk during sampling and analysis. Only a few of the microplastic exposure studies with aquatic organisms were conducted with microplastic fibers. Recent effect studies demonstrated several negative impacts of microplastic fibers on aquatic organisms, which include tissue damage, reduced growth, and body condition and even mortality. Such negative effects were predominantly observed in taxa at the basis of the food chain. Higher taxa were less heavily affected in direct exposure experiments, but they presumably suffer from negative effects on organisms at lower food chain levels in the wild.
