Livestock waste is stored and used as soil fertilizer or directly as substrate for biogas production. Methane emissions from manure storages and ammonia inhibition of anaerobic digesters fed with manure, are well-known problems related to manure management. This study examines the effect of adding tannic acid with fluoride (TA-NaF) and lignosulfonic acid (LS) on methanogenic activity in batch reactors with ammonia inhibited maize silage digestate and in batch reactors with manure. Lignosulfonic acid counteracted urea induced ammonia inhibition of methanogenesis, whereas TA-NaF inhibited methanogenesis itself. Stable carbon isotope ratio analysis and methanogen community analysis suggested that TA-NaF affected acetoclastic methanogens the most. The combined findings suggest that TA-NaF could be used to reduce methane emissions from stored manure. Conversely, LS could be used as supplement in anaerobic digesters prone to urea induced ammonia inhibition. Rare information is available on the facile preparation of biochar/sulfidated Fe0 composite. A facile one-step green method was established for the synthesis of magnetic seaweed (Ulva prolifera) biochar/sulfidated Fe0 composite (S-Fe0/BC) to use excessive seaweed biomass. Removal efficiency of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) reached up to 88% in iron-sulfur treatment. Two major products were identified as bisphenol A and monobromobisphenol A, confirming the in-situ reductive debromination of TBBPA. Batch experiments showed that the removal of TBBPA was facilitated with S/Fe molar ratio of 0.2 and acidic conditions (pH = 3-7). The S-Fe0/BC composite had good stability and reusability based on the cycle experiments. The removal process of TBBPA by S-Fe0/BC composite might include chemical adsorption by S-Fe0/BC composite, reduction debromination by S-Fe0 and enhanced electron transfer. The environmentally-friendly S-Fe0/BC composite synthesized by one-step facile procedure showed novel potential applications in terms of pollution control of halogenated xenobiotic compounds such as TBBPA. A lignin-biochar with high acidic oxygen-containing groups was produced via a facile simultaneous oxidization and carbonization of pulping lignin by using sulfuric acid for the first time. The lignin-biochars were investigated by 13C NMR, FTIR and XPS, and results demonstrated that treatment by sulfuric acid could oxidize part of aromatic ring side chain to introduce high acidic oxygen-containing group, especially carboxyl group. Their total acidic oxygen-containing groups of lignin-biochar including COOH and Ar-OH reached 8.64 mmol/g. Adsorption experiments were carried and the maximum adsorption capacity of lignin-biochar for Pb2+ reached 679 mg/g, which was significantly higher than other lignin-based or carbon adsorbents. Moreover, it could maintain high removal rate at high adsorption capacity. It also demonstrated that adsorption capability was proportional to the accessible carboxyl groups. BACKGROUND The role of biomechanical variables of running gait in the development of running related injury has not been clearly elucidated. Several systematic reviews have examined running biomechanics and its association with particular running related injuries. However, due to retrospective designs, inferences into the cause of these injuries are limited. Although prospective studies have been completed, no quantitative analysis pooling these results has been completed. METHODS A systematic review of MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PubMed was completed. Articles included used prospective study designs, human subjects currently completing a regular running program, and a minimum 12-week follow-up period. Excluded articles had no biomechanical data reported, participants who were beginning runners or military recruits, or had an intervention provided. FINDINGS Thirteen studies met these criteria. Pooled analyses were completed if two or more studies were available with samples that investigated the same sex and competition level. A qualitative synthesis was completed when pooled analysis was not possible. Five unique running samples were identified and allowed for pooled analyses of variables in mixed-sex collegiate runners and female recreational runners. Moderate evidence exists for increased hip adduction and reduced peak rearfoot eversion as risk factors for running related injury in female recreational runners. Variables differed in other samples of runners. INTERPRETATION A runner's sex and competition level may affect the relationship between biomechanical factors and the development of running related injury. Hip adduction and rearfoot eversion may be important factors related to running related injury in female recreational runners. Further investigation of biomechanical factors in running injury is warranted. INTRODUCTION The opioid overdose crisis in the United States has prompted an expansion of treatment services, including pharmacotherapy with buprenorphine. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/s-2-hydroxysuccinic-acid.html However, many people who use illicit opioids (PWUIO) self-treat their opioid-use disorder (OUD) with non-prescribed buprenorphine (NPB) in lieu of attending formal treatment. The present study aims to qualitatively understand motivations of people who are self-treating their OUD with NPB. METHODS Qualitative study designed to supplement and contextualize quantitative findings from natural history study of buprenorphine diversion, self-treatment, and use of substance use disorder treatment services. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, systematically coded and analyzed via Iterative Categorization. STUDY SETTING The Dayton, Ohio metropolitan area in the midwestern United States; a site previously characterized as high impact in the national opioid overdose crisis. PARTICIPANTS Sixty-five individuals (35 men and 30 women) who met the DSM-5 criteria for OUD (moderate or severe) and had used NPB at least one time in the six months prior to their intake interview. RESULTS Participants described four key motivators for self-treating with NPB perceived demands of formal treatment, the desire to utilize non-prescribed buprenorphine in combination with a geographic relocation, to self-initiate treatment while preparing for formal services, and to bolster a sense of self-determination and agency in their recovery trajectory. CONCLUSIONS Use of NPB is a recognized self-treatment modality among PWUIO, with some PWUIO transitioning into sustained recovery episodes or enrollment in formal treatment. Understanding the motivations for opting out of treatment is crucial for improving forms of care for people with OUD.
