Hence, intraspecific competition over plant development and spatiotemporal variability in the root-C input and nutrients uptake may modify SOM mineralization. To investigate the effect of intraspecific competition on SOM mineralization at three growth stages (heading, flowering, and ripening), we grew maize (C4 plant) under three planting densities on a C3 soil and determined in situ soil C- and N-mineralization by 13 C-natural abundance and 15 N-pool dilution approaches. From heading to ripening, soil C- and N-mineralization rates exhibit similar unimodal trends and were tightly coupled. The C-to-N-mineralization ratio (0.6 to 2.6) increased with N availability, indicating that an increase in N-mineralization with N depletion was driven by microorganisms mining N-rich SOM. With the intraspecific competition, plants increased specific root lengths as an efficient strategy to compete for resources. Root morphologic traits rather than root biomass per se were positively related to C- and N-mineralization. Overall, plant phenology and intraspecific competition controlled the intensity and mechanisms of soil C- and N- mineralization by the adaptation of root traits and nutrient mining.Antihuman leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies restrict the access to cardiac allografts. Desensitization therapy is a major challenge in patients with cardiogenic shock waiting for urgent heart transplantation (HT). We retrospectively reviewed six patients (mean age of 37.5 years [16-70]) who underwent plasmapheresis (PP) under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) before transplant between January 2017 and September 2018. The average duration of follow-up was 25 months [20-32]. Mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) of HLA-specific antibodies was reported as follows score 4 for MFI 3000. The mean duration of ECMO support was 29 days [1-74] and 6.8 [1-29] PP sessions were performed per patient before transplant. The mean number of HLA-specific antibodies before HT was 9.6 for score 6 [4-13] and 5.8 for score 8 [1-12]. Four patients had major complications after transplantation (2 hemorrhagic shocks, 5 infectious events). Mean MFI reduction rate was 94% [79-100] for Class I and 44.2% for Class II [0-83]. Data (mean ± SD) were compared between unaffected dogs and dogs with idiopathic chylothorax. The cisterna chyli included more branches in dogs with chylothorax (4.30 ± 1.57) than in unaffected dogs (1.67 ± 0.56, P = .02), occupying a relative perimeter approximately double that in unaffected dogs (P < .001). The relative cross-sectional area of the cisterna chyli was approximately twofold smaller in affected (0.73 ± 0.35) than in unaffected (1.63 ± 0.91, P = .02) dogs. The fraction of dogs with branches greater than 25% of the cross-sectional area of the aorta tended to be larger in unaffected dogs (P = .07). Most larger branches were located dorsal or to the right of the aorta. The cisterna chyli of dogs with idiopathic chylothorax contained smaller and more numerous branches compared with that of unaffected dogs. Asthma is highly heterogeneous, and severity evaluation is key to asthma management. DNA methylation (DNAm) contributes to asthma pathogenesis. This study aimed to identify nasal epithelial DNAm differences between severe and nonsevere asthmatic children and evaluate the impact of environmental exposures. Thirty-three nonsevere and 22 severe asthmatic African American children were included in an epigenome-wide association study. Genome-wide nasal epithelial DNAm and gene expression were measured. CpG sites associated with asthma severity and environmental exposures and predictive of severe asthma were identified. DNAm was correlated with gene expression. Enrichment for transcription factor (TF) binding sites or histone modifications surrounding DNAm differences were determined. We identified 816 differentially methylated CpG positions (DMPs) and 10 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) associated with asthma severity. Three DMPs exhibited discriminatory ability for severe asthma. Intriguingly, six DMPs were simultaneously associated with asthma, allergic asthma, total IgE, environmental IgE, and FeNO in an independent cohort of children.
