Each 1% increase in urinary copper was statistically significantly associated with a 5.32% (95% CI 2.48%, 8.24%) increase in TG after adjusting for the confounders (P 0.05). In addition, urinary copper increased monotonically with plasma CRP elevation, which in turn, was positively associated with TC, TG, and LDL-C and negatively related to HDL-C (all P less then 0.05). Results from 3D mesh graphs demonstrated that increased levels of plasma CRP with higher urinary copper corresponded to higher TC, TG, LDL-C, and lower HDL-C concentrations. Mediation analysis observed that CRP mediated 6.27% in the relationships of urinary copper and TG. These findings suggest that systemic inflammation partly mediated the association between copper exposure and abnormal blood lipid, and may contribute to the development of dyslipidemias.Urine, which is an important waste biomass resource, is the main source of nitrogen in sewage and contains large quantities of emerging contaminants (ECs). In this study, we propose a new method to efficiently remove urine, simultaneously eliminate ECs, and control the generation of toxic chlorate during urine treatment using a photoelectrocatalytic-chlorine (PEC-Cl) system. A type-II heterojunction of WO3/BiVO4 was used as a photoanode to generate chlorine radicals (Cl•) by decreasing the oxidation potential of WO3 valence band for the highly selective conversion of urine to N2 and the simultaneous degradation of ECs in an efficient manner. The method presented surprising results. It was observed that the amount of toxic chlorate was significantly inhibited by circumventing the over-oxidation of Cl- by holes or hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Moreover, the removal of urea nitrogen reached 97% within 90 min, while the degradation rate of trimethoprim in urine was above 98.6% within 60 min, which was eight times more than that in the PEC system (12.1%). Compared to the bare WO3 photoanode, the toxic chlorate and nitrate generated by the WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction photoanode decreased by 61% and 44%, respectively. Thus, this study provides a safe, efficient, and environmentally-friendly approach for the disposal of urine.Ingestion of lead (Pb) derived from ammunition used in the hunting of game animals is recognised to be a significant potential source of Pb exposure of wild birds, including birds of prey. However, there are only limited data for birds of prey in Europe regarding tissue concentrations and origins of Pb. Eurasian buzzards (Buteo buteo) found dead in the United Kingdom during an 11-year period were collected and the concentrations of Pb in the liver and femur were measured. Concentrations in the liver consistent with acute exposure to Pb were found in 2.7% of birds and concentration in the femur consistent with exposure to lethal levels were found in 4.0% of individuals. Pb concentration in the femur showed no evidence of consistent variation among or within years, but was greater for old than for young birds. The Pb concentration in the liver showed no effect of the birds' age, but varied markedly among years and showed a consistent tendency to increase substantially within years throughout the UK hunting season for gamebirds. The resemblance of the stable isotope composition of Pb from buzzard livers to that of Pb from the types of shotgun ammunition most widely-used in the UK increased markedly with increasing Pb concentration in the liver. Stable isotope results were consistent with 57% of the mass of Pb in livers of all of the buzzards sampled being derived from shotgun pellets, with this proportion being 89% for the birds with concentrations indicating acute exposure to Pb. Hence, most of the Pb acquired by Eurasian buzzards which have liver concentrations likely to be associated with lethal and sublethal effects is probably obtained when they prey upon or scavenge gamebirds and mammals shot using Pb shotgun pellets.Mercury, omega-3 (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA) and macronutrients (fat and proteins) were quantified on a wet weight (ww) basis in 20 species of fish taken as bycatch in tropical tuna fisheries. Based on a hazard quotient taking into account mercury and omega-3 contents, a benefit-risk assessment for the consumption of these pelagic species was conducted for three people categories young children, children and adults. All fish bycatch were found to be an excellent source of proteins (min‒max = 14.4-25.2 g/100 g fillet), had low omega-6/omega-3 ratios ( less then 1, except for silky shark), and had mercury content below the safety limits defined by sanitary agencies. Silky shark and Istiophoridae had the highest mercury contents (min‒max = 0.029-0.317 ppm ww). Omega-3 contents were the lowest in silky shark (0.2 ± 0.2 mg/100 g fillet) and the highest in striped marlin (3.6 ± 3.2 g/100 g fillet). Billfishes (Istiophoridae, including striped marlin), minor tunas (Scombridae), and Carangidae had the highest omega-3 contents (min‒max = 0.68-7.28 g/100 g fillet). The highest hazard quotient values obtained for silky shark and great barracuda reflected a lower nutritional benefit (i.e., low omega-3 source) than risk (i.e., mercury exposure), making them not advisable for consumption. Eight species had low hazard quotients, and among them cottonmouth jack and flat needlefish were found of high health interest (high protein, moderate fat contents, and low omega-6/omega-3 ratio). A daily serving portion of 85-200 g (according to people category) can be recommended for these species. Batfish, and to a lower extent pompano dolphinfish and brassy chub, can also be consumed safely and would provide greater health benefits than risks. These results advocate for a better access of these species to local populations.The optical properties of light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols have caused increasing concerns due to their significant impacts on local and regional climates. In this study, particles from biomass burning in home stoves were collected and evaluated for their optical properties. The absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) values ranged from 1.17 to 2.92 and negatively correlated with the modified combustion efficiency, indicatinging more brown carbon in combustion emissions with relatively low combustion efficiencies.
