Conclusions SAVR utilizing a minimally invasive extracorporeal circuit improves the quality of patient care and can offer an alternative to TAVR in octogenarians.Burns from contact with hot pavement are a common mechanism treated at burn centers located in desert climates. Previous work has shown increased risk of pavement burns as ambient temperatures rise above 95 degrees. In direct sunlight, pavement absorbs radiant energy causing the temperature to rise high enough to cause second degree burns in seconds. The goal of this study is to review the mechanisms and outcomes of patients suffering pavement burns, and to compare patients who presented with hyperthermia to their normothermia counterparts. A retrospective chart review was performed on pavement burns at an ABA-verified Burn Center for 5 years from 2014-2018. A total of 195 patients were identified. It was found that 50.5% of admitted pavement burn patients required burn excision and 35.9% required split thickness skin grafting. The leading causes of pavement burn admissions were found down by EMS and walking on pavement at 21.6% each, followed by mechanical falls at 15.1%. We found that patients with recorded hyperthermia had statistically significant increase in 30-day hospital mortality, ICU days, surgical procedures and percent TBSA. Data provided from this study can be used for a public health initiative to help patients who may be at risk of acquiring pavement burns. The data may also be helpful for clinicians gaining information about the management, mechanism and outcomes of pavement burn patients.Background RT-PCR has become the primary method to diagnose viral diseases, including SARS-CoV-2. RT-PCR detects RNA, not infectious virus, thus its ability to determine duration of infectivity of patients is limited. Infectivity is a critical determinant in informing public health guidelines/interventions. Our goal was to determine the relationship between E gene SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR cycle threshold (Ct) values from respiratory samples, symptom onset to test (STT) and infectivity in cell culture. Methods In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we took SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR confirmed positive samples and determined their ability to infect Vero cell lines. Results Ninety RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 positive samples were incubated on Vero cells. Twenty-six samples (28.9%) demonstrated viral growth. Median TCID50/ml was 1780 (282-8511). There was no growth in samples with a Ct > 24 or STT > 8 days. Multivariate logistic regression using positive viral culture as a binary predictor variable, STT and Ct demonstrated an odds ratio for positive viral culture of 0.64 (95% CI 0.49-0.84, p8 days may be low. This information can inform public health policy and guide clinical, infection control and occupational health decisions. Further studies of larger size are needed.Identifying new options to improve photosynthetic capacity is a major approach to improve crop yield potential. Here we report that over-expression of one transcription factor, mEmBP-1 gene, led to simultaneously increased expression of many genes in photosynthesis, including genes encoding chlorophyll a, b-binding proteins (Lhca and Lhcb), photosystem II (PsbR3 and PsbW) and photosystem I reaction center subunits (PsaK and PsaN), chloroplast ATP synthase subunit and electron transport reaction components (Fd1 and PC), and also major genes in the Calvin Benson Bassham cycle, including Rubisco, GAPDH, FBA, TK and PRK. These increased photosynthesis gene expressions resulted in increased leaf chlorophyll pigment, photosynthetic rate, biomass growth and grain yield both in the greenhouse and also in the field. Using EMSA experiments, we showed that mEmBP-1a protein can directly bind to the promoter region of photosynthesis genes, suggesting that the direct binding of mEmBP-1a to the G-box domain of photosynthetic genes upregulates expression of these genes. In summary, this study shows that mEmBP-1a is a major regulator of photosynthesis, which can be used to increase rice photosynthesis and yield in the field.Objectives This study aims to investigate the incidence and determinants of major early adverse events in low-risk patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods The multicentre E-CABG registry included 7352 consecutive patients who underwent isolated CABG from January 2015 to December 2016. Patients with an European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) II of less then 2% and without any major comorbidity were the subjects of the present analysis. Results Out of 2397 low-risk patients, 11 (0.46%) died during the index hospitalization or within 30 days from surgery. Five deaths were cardiac related, 4 of which were secondary to technical failures. The objective of this study was to investigate the mid-term outcome and temporal pattern of aortic remodelling after endovascular treatment for DeBakey IIIb dissection. Methods From 2012 to 2017, 85 patients who underwent endovascular aortic repair for DeBakey IIIb dissection were enrolled. The temporal pattern of aortic remodelling in terms of false lumen (FL) thrombosis [level 1 (∼T7), level 2 (T7 ∼ coeliac axis) and level 3 (coeliac trunk ∼ aortic bifurcation)] and aortic diameter [mid-thoracic level (T7), coeliac axis and the largest infrarenal abdominal aorta] was investigated on serial follow-up computed tomography scan. Results Eighty-five patients underwent endovascular treatment during the study period. Male sex was a significant risk factor for repetitive reintervention and segments 2 and 3 FL thrombosis. The preoperative FL diameter at T7 was significantly associated with FL diameter regression.
