Several studies have been carried out to verify neural plasticity and the language process in deaf individuals. However, further investigations regarding the intrinsic brain organization on functional and structural neural networks derived from congenital deafness are still an open question. The objective of this study was to investigate the main differences in brain organization manifested in congenitally deaf individuals, concerning the resting-state functional patterns, and white matter structuring. Functional and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging modalities were acquired from 18 congenitally deaf individuals and 18 age-sex-matched hearing controls. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/alantolactone.html Compared to the hearing group, the deaf individuals presented higher functional connectivity among the posterior cingulate cortex node of the default mode network with visual and motor networks, lower functional connectivity between salience networks, language networks, and prominence of functional connectivity changes in the right hemisphere, mostly in the frontoparietal and temporal lobes. In terms of structural connectivity, we found changes mainly in the occipital and parietal lobes, involving both classical sign language support regions as well as concentrated networks for focus activity, attention, and cognitive filtering. Our findings demonstrated that the congenital deaf individuals who learned sign language developed significant brain functional and structural reorganization, which provides prominent support for large-scale brain networks associated with attention decision-making, environmental monitoring based on the movement of objects, and on the motor and visual controls. The neonatal period is the most vulnerable period for a child. There is a paucity of data on the burden of neonatal surgical disease in our setting. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency with which index neonatal surgical conditions are seen within our setting and to document the 30-day outcome of these patients. This was a single-centre prospective observational study in which all neonates with paediatric surgical pathology referred to the paediatric surgical unit with a corrected gestational age of 28days were included. Necrotising enterocolitis was the most frequent reason for referral to the paediatric surgical unit (n = 68, 34.34%). Gastroschisis was the most frequent congenital anomaly referred (n = 20, 10.10%). Prevention and improvement in infection control are imperative if we are to improve outcomes in our surgical neonates.Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified hundreds of genetic loci for osteoporosis (OP) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), individually, however, a large proportion of the total trait heritability remains unexplained. Previous studies demonstrated that these two diseases may share some common genetic determination and risk factors, but they were generally focused on individual trait and failed to identify the common variants that play key functional roles in the etiology of these two diseases. Here, we performed a conditional false discovery rate (cFDR) analysis to identify novel pleiotropic variants shared between them by integrating two independent GWASs with summary statistics for total body bone mineral density (TB-BMD, a major risk factor for osteoporosis) (n = 66,628) and RA (n = 58,284). A fine-mapping approach was also applied to identify the most probable causal variants with biological effects on both TB-BMD and RA. As a result, we found 47 independent pleiotropic SNPs shared between TB-BMD and RA, and 40 of them were validated in heel ultrasound estimated BMD (eBMD), femoral neck BMD (FN-BMD) or lumbar spine (LS-BMD). We detected one SNP (rs13299616) was novel and not identified by previous BMD or RA-related studies. Combined with fine-mapping and GWAS-eQTL colocalization analyses, our results suggested that locus 1p13.2 (including PTPN22, MAGI3, PHTF1, and RSBN1) was an important region to regulate TB-BMD and RA simultaneously. These findings provide new insights into the shared biological mechanisms and functional genetic determinants between OP and RA, and novel potential targets for treatment development.Often one must depart from an intended course of events to react to sudden situational demands before resuming his or her original action retained in working memory. Retaining an action plan in working memory (WM) can delay or facilitate the execution of an intervening action when the action features of the two action plans partly overlap (partial repetition) compared to when they do not overlap. We investigated whether partial repetition costs (PRCs) or benefits (PRBs) occur when the intervening event is an ideomotor-compatible stimulus that is a biological representation of the response required by the participant. Participants viewed two visual events and retained an action plan to the first event (A) while executing a speeded response to the second, intervening event (B). In Experiment 1A, the two visual events were ideomotor compatible, non-ideomotor compatible (abstract), or one was ideomotor compatible, and the other abstract. Results showed PRCs for all event A-B stimulus combinations with reduced PRCs for intervening, ideomotor compatible events. In contrast to previous research, there was no evidence that ideomotor-compatible actions were automatic and bypassed the selection bottleneck. Experiment 1B confirmed PRCs for ideomotor compatible stimuli that more accurately mimicked the required response. Findings suggest that mechanisms for activating, selecting, and retaining action plans are similar between ideomotor compatible and abstract visual events. We conclude that PRCs occur in response to intervening events when action plans are generated offline and rely on WM, including those for ideomotor-compatible stimuli; but PRBs may be restricted to actions generated online. This conclusion is consistent with the perceptual-motor framework by Goodale and Milner (Trends in Neuroscience 1522-25, 1992).
