Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs), which are among the most common genetic diseases in humans, define a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of disorders. Over 80 forms of syndromic IRDs have been described. Approximately 200 genes are associated with these syndromes. The majority of syndromic IRDs are recessively inherited and rare. Many, although not all, syndromic IRDs can be classified into one of two major disease groups inborn errors of metabolism and ciliopathies. Besides the retina, the systems and organs most commonly involved in syndromic IRDs are the central nervous system, ophthalmic extra-retinal tissues, ear, skeleton, kidney and the cardiovascular system. The VPP system was modeled according to the blade element momentum (BEM) theory, and an actuator allocation method was developed with the aim of enhancing the attitude control and energy performance. A simulation environment was built to validate the VPP system by creating a thrust and moment database from the experiments. A four-motor variable-pitch quadrotor was built for verifying the proposed method. The control allocation method was firstly verified in a simulation environment, and was then implemented in a flight controller for indoor flight experiments. The simulation results show the proposed control allocation method greatly improves the yaw following performance. The experimental results demonstrate a difference in the energy consumption through various pitch angles, as well as a reduction in energy consumption, by applying this VPP system.Crop wild relatives (CWR) have proven to be very valuable in agricultural breeding programs but remain a relatively under-utilized and under-protected resource. CWR have provided resistance to pests and diseases, abiotic stress tolerance, quality improvements and yield increases with the annual contribution of these traits to agriculture estimated at USD 115 billion globally and are considered to possess many valuable traits that have not yet been explored. The use of the genetic diversity found in CWR for breeding provides much-needed resilience to modern agricultural systems and has great potential to help sustainably increase agricultural production to feed a growing world population in the face of climate change and other stresses. A number of CWR taxa are at risk, however, necessitating coordinated local, national, regional and global efforts to preserve the genetic diversity of these plants through complementary in situ and ex situ conservation efforts. We discuss the absence of adequate institutional frameworks to incentivize CWR conservation services and propose payment for ecosystem services (PES) as an under-explored mechanism for financing these efforts. Such mechanisms could serve as a potentially powerful tool for enhancing the long-term protection of CWR.Scholastic performance is the key metric by which schools measure student's academic success, and it is important to understand the neural-correlates associated with greater scholastic performance. This study examines resting-state functional connectivity (RsFc) associated with scholastic performance (reading and mathematics) in preadolescent children (7-9 years) using an unbiased whole-brain connectome-wide multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA). MVPA revealed four clusters associated with reading composite score, these clusters were then used for whole-brain seed-based RsFc analysis. However, no such clusters were found for mathematics composite score. Post hoc analysis found robust associations between reading and RsFc dynamics with areas involved with the somatomotor, dorsal attention, ventral attention, limbic, frontoparietal, and default mode networks. These findings indicate that reading ability may be associated with a wide range of RsFc networks. Of particular interest, anticorrelations were observed between the default mode network and the somatomotor, dorsal attention, ventral attention, and frontoparietal networks. Previous research has demonstrated the importance of anticorrelations between the default mode network and frontoparietal network associated with cognition. These results extend the current literature exploring the role of network connectivity in scholastic performance of children.This study aimed to isolate and characterize Treponema spp. from bovine digital dermatitis (BDD)-infected dairy cattle. Seven isolates were characterized in this study. Isolates exhibited slow growth, and colonies penetrated the agar and exhibited weak β-hemolysis. Round bodies were observed in old and antibiotic-treated cultures. Cells ranged from 9-12 µm in length, 0.2-2.5 µm in width, and were moderately spiraled. The 16S rRNA analysis revealed the isolates as Treponema phagedenis with >99% sequence homology. Isolates had alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, β-galactosidase, N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase, esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8), naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase, and β-glucuronidase activities. Low concentrations of ampicillin, erythromycin, and tetracycline were required to inhibit the growth of isolates. Formic, acetic, and butyric acids were produced, while propionic acid was significantly utilized, indicating its essentiality for treponemal growth. The isolates shared the same characteristics and, therefore, were considered as a single strain. Isolate HNL4 was deposited as a representative isolate (Treponema phagedenis KS1). The average nucleotide identity of strain KS1 showed a small difference with the human strain (99.14%) compared with bovine strain (99.72%). This study was the first to isolate and characterize Treponema phagedenis from BDD in Korea and, hence, it delivered pathogenicity-related insights and provided valuable information that can be used for the management of BDD.
