Most upgrades require the equipment to be at a certain level before they can be upgraded. To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player must select it and then click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade statistics and the components or materials required for the upgrade. There are three types of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be used on any kind of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that are subject to a type limitation. Infusions are jewels that are only available in equipment that is legendary or ascended. They offer the same bonuses as jewels, but they cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add a suffix at the end of item names.
