Use pliers with a needle-nose to remove the broken piece of key from your ignition cylinder before calling an expert locksmith or dealer. Be gentle and patient to avoid causing further damage. 1. Turn off the Key Ignition You're at a gas station, you're buying groceries or you're just going home after an exhausting day at work when your car isn't starting. It can be frustrating especially when you're already late. There are several things that can cause problems with your car keys. Fortunately, the majority of these issues are easily solved. First, check to see if the key is actually stuck. It's not uncommon for people to mistakenly grab the wrong key from the table or their keychain but if the key fits well in the cylinder and isn't loose or dirty it is likely to be able to start your car. Wiggle the key a few times within the ignition, making sure not to damage it with too much force or pressure. If this doesn't work then try a graphite-based grease. Spray it into the cylinder, then insert and remove the key a few times to work the lubricant into all wards of the cylinder. If you're still unable to get your car to start, it could be time to replace your key. If the teeth of your key are worn it will be difficult to get them to engage the pins in the cylinder. A new key won't cost much however it's worth it if the key is stuck in the ignition. If the gear selector is set to "P" (park), this may also stop your car from starting. In this situation, you need to check the shifter and make sure it's in the proper position to turn the key. If you're not comfortable repairing the issue yourself, consult an expert at your local AutoZone store to identify and repair the problem. 2.
