Living in various habitats, tardigrades play major roles as consumers and decomposers in the trophic networks of Antarctic terrestrial and freshwater environments; yet we still know little about their biodiversity. The Eutardigrada is a species rich class, for which the eggshell morphology is one of the key morphological characters. Tardigrade egg morphology shows a diverse appearance, and it is known that, despite rare, intraspecific variation is caused by seasonality, epigenetics, and external environmental conditions. Interestingly, we observed a range of eggshell morphologies from the new species, although the population was cultured under controlled laboratory condition. We have analyzed the in vitro anti-amyloid activity of four green tea constituents (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), (-)-epicatechin (EC), gallic acid (GA), caffeine (CF), and their equimolar mixtures. Regarding individually tested compounds, only EGCG inhibited the fibrillization process. The individual EC, GA, and CF molecules were ineffective. The presence of EGCG in equimolar combinations with GA, EC, or CF was required for the inhibitory activity of most mixtures. Molecular docking revealed that EGCG interacts with an essential amyloidogenic region of insulin chain B. Individually inactive GA had a potentiating effect on the activity of EGCG. In contrast, EC and CF had a negative impact on the activity of the mixtures. We have observed diverse morphology and the amount of insulin amyloid aggregates formed in the presence of studied compounds. The distinct types of amyloid aggregates created in vitro in the presence of EGCG and other green tea constituents were characterized. Results indicate that the biological activity of individual molecules is not directly applicable to the pooled samples effects prediction.Background/objectives To investigate the agreement between optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) and non-mydriatic retinal camera (NMRC) in estimating the optic nerve head (ONH) parameters and evaluate the associations between peripapillary vessel density (VD) with ONH parameters assessed by both devices. Methods The OCT-A and NMRC images of 262 participants (138 eyes were diagnosed with POAG, 63 were glaucoma suspect, and 61 were healthy subjects) were screened retrospectively. The vertical cup-to-disc ratio (VCDR), cup-to-disc area ratio (CDAR), rim area (RA), disc area (DA), and cup volume (CV) were recorded using both devices. Peripapillary VD data were also recorded using OCT-A. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman plots were obtained to investigate the agreement between the devices. Age- and intraocular pressure (IOP)-corrected associations between the VD and ONH parameters measured by the two devices were analyzed using linear regression models. Results ICC revealed excellent agreement for VCDR and CDAR, but poor agreement for RA, DA, and CV (ICC = 0.801, 0.793, 0.445, 0.298, and 0.527, respectively). The Bland-Altman plots showed poor agreement for VCDR and CDAR with a large span of limits of agreement (0.500 and 0.528, respectively) and significant proportional biases (P less then 0.05). VD was found to be strongly associated with the VCDR and CDAR measurements of both devices (P less then 0.001), but the associations were stronger for the measurements of NMRC. Conclusions The disagreement between the devices should be considered in clinical practice. The associations between the VD and ONH parameters proved once again the importance of the ONH parameters in terms of the management of glaucoma patients.Purpose To investigate the association between the laminar dot sign (LDS) and the deep optic nerve head (ONH) structure in eyes with primary-open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods Eighty-four eyes of 84 patients with POAG were prospectively included. All of the patients underwent stereo optic disc photography (SDP), red-free retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) photography, SS-OCT, and standard automated perimetry. By evaluating the SDP, patients were classified into laminar dot sign (LDS) and non-LDS groups. The deep structure of the ONH including the anterior prelaminar depth (APLD) and prelaminar tissue thickness (PTT) were quantitated using SS-OCT. Progression was assessed by structural or functional deterioration during the average 4.3 ± 1.2 years of follow-up. Results The LDS group had deeper APLD (405.47 ± 107.55 vs. 302.45 ± 149.51, P less then 0.001) and thinner PTT (74.34 ± 24.46 vs. 137.29 ± 40.07, P = 0.001) relative to the non-LDS group. By multivariate analysis, thin PTT was significantly associated with the presence of LDS (odds ratio = 0.
