To test its performance, the reflected intensity was measured, and the results showed that the microfiber ball with the largest diameter of 360 µm had the maximum reflected intensity. The 360 µm microfiber ball was characterized by scanning electron microscope. This indicates that compared with a small-diameter microfiber ball, large-diameter microspheres are more suitable to be used as follow-up experimental objects, with the diameter of the fiber ball ranging from 330 to 360 µm.We have developed a high-power ultraviolet (UV) nanosecond-pulsed laser based on a rod-type photonic crystal fiber. The UV pulse energy and the pulse repetition rate are 0.75 mJ and 100 kHz, respectively, yielding 75-W UV average power. The temporal pulse shape and the linewidth of a 1030-nm seed laser are optimized for efficient third-harmonic generation, and the high conversion efficiency of 50% is achieved with a good beam quality (M2∼1.2). To our knowledge, this is the highest UV pulse energy from fiber lasers. We present a comparison of the first numerical and experimental results for the scattering of light from rough surfaces using a recently developed variable coherence polarimetry source that permits obtaining information on the object without having to scan over incidence or scatter angle. We present, for the first time, we believe, the application of this source to a 1D rough surface and show how to analyze the scattered field to retrieve useful information about the surface. This source uses a liquid-crystal phase modulator to control the polarization as well as the coherence of the beam illuminating the rough surface. Changing the polarization state distribution at the source plane, by controlling the phase distribution on a spatial l
