Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis, 10 participants from each culture were interviewed to elucidate the most relevant and important emerging themes. The process of oncogenesis is conceptually important for physicians, both for clinical reasons, and for their engagement in oncological research. However, these reviews are written for specialists in the field, which presents barriers for novice learners. Therefore, to allow students, and also clinicians external to the oncological field, to access this valuable framework for understanding oncogenesis, we have created a condensed summary of the original reviews. Our institutions use a "flipped" approach to the large-group components of our preclinical education. We have successfully used our Hallmarks of Cancer summary as the prework for sessions on oncogenesis for five years at one institution, and nine years at the other, typically at the end of cancer blocks within integrated, multidisciplinary courses. We report here survey results indicating learners strongly appreciate the summary as both preparation material for participation in relevant flipped classroom sessions, and as a general review of oncogenesis. It is often made with clinician support, perhaps on the basis of results from standardized paper and pencil tests, and less frequently an assessment of on-road driving. However, the resources required and inherent reliability and validity challenges suggest that greater use of computerization and driving simulation may play a useful role in the assessment process. In this study, thirty-six age-matched healthy and post-stroke drivers completed standard psychometric assessments (including NART, MMSE, BADS, IADL), computer delivered cognitive assessments (including SART, N-Back, Simple Reaction Time), as well as simulated and on-road assessments of driving. While significantly different in terms of psychometric and computer-based assessments, the healthy and post-stroke drivers who completed the on-road test did not differ. In contrast, driving in the portable simulator showed impaired driving, on some but not all driving manoeuvres, for those who failed the on-road test or had voluntarily ceased to drive. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of lower extremity compartment syndrome in National Football League (NFL) athletes and report the mechanisms of injury, methods of treatment, and subsequent days missed. We review the existing literature on lower extremity compartment syndrome in athletic populations. Lower extremity compartment syndrome occurs with a low incidence in NFL athletes, and there is a high return-to-play rate after surgical management of acute compartment syndrome. Case series. Level 4. A retrospective review of recorded cases of lower extremity compartment syndrome from 2000 to 2017 was performed using the NFL Injury Surveillance System and electronic medical record system. Epidemiological data, injury mechanism, rates of surgery, and days missed due to injury were recorded. During the study period, 22 cases of leg compartment syndrome in 21 athletes were recorded. Of these injuries, 50% occurred in games and 73% were the result of a direct impact to the leg. Concomitant tibial fracture was noted in only 2 cases (9.1%) and there was only 1 reported case of chronic exertional compartment syndrome. Surgery was documented in 15 of 22 cases (68.2%). For acute nonfracture cases, the average time missed due to injury was 24.2 days (range, 5-54 days), and all were able to return to full participation within the same season. NFL athletes with acute leg compartment syndrome treated with surgery exhibited a high rate of return to play within the same season. Although compartment syndrome is a relatively rare diagnosis among NFL players, team physicians and athletic trainers must maintain a high index of suspicion to expediently diagnose and treat this potentially limb-threatening condition.
