The walnut husk maggot, Rhagoletis sauvis (Loew) (Diptera Tephritidae), causes damage to walnuts when maggots feed inside the husk. September applications of the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium brunneum F52 as microsclerotia laced granules to the soil in Illinois were evaluated for pest control based on adult emergence during the following summer. Over 3 yr in central Illinois, adult emergence began near 1 July, peaked before 23 July, and emergence extended as late as 23 August. One summer application of fungus (30 June) when pupae were present, did not reduce fly emergence. Of two September applications that targeted maggots as they move to the soil to pupate, one significantly reduced the number of flies emerging from treated plots when compared with untreated plots for one 7-d sample collected 29 July 2020. Emergence trap data show a defined peak adult emergence in July for central Illinois while September applications of granules containing Metarhizium brunneum (Petch) (Hypocreales Clavicipitaceae) show shows potential to reduced subsequent fly emergence.Scalds are a common cause of burn injury in children. Instant soup and noodle products have been identified as a common cause of pediatric burn injuries, with both the preparation process and product packaging implicated as predisposing factors. A cohort of children was observed simulating the preparation of a cup of noodle soup to identify steps in the process in which injury was mostly likely to occur. 19% of participants spilled the simulated soup onto themselves, representing potential burn injuries had the liquid been hot. The upper extremity was the most commonly affected body area and spillage occurred most commonly while the participant was transporting the cup of simulated soup. Targeted caregiver education about the potential dangers to children from instant soup and noodle products and investigation into safer packaging are needed to decrease the risk of these injuries in children.On June 17 to 18, 2019, the American Burn Association, in conjunction with Underwriters Laboratories, convened a group of experts on burn resuscitation in Washington, DC. The goal of the meeting was to identify and discuss novel research and strategies to optimize the process of burn resuscitation. Patients who sustain a large thermal injury (involving >20% of the total body surface area [TBSA]) face a sequence of challenges, beginning with burn shock. Over the last century, research has helped elucidate much of the underlying pathophysiology of burn shock, which places multiple organ systems at risk of damage or dysfunction. These studies advanced the understanding of the need for fluids for resuscitation. The resultant practice of judicious and timely infusion of crystalloids has improved mortality after major thermal injury. However, much remains unclear about how to further improve and customize resuscitation practice to limit the morbidities associated with edema and volume overload. Herein, we review the history and pathophysiology of shock following thermal injury, and propose some of the priorities for resuscitation research. Recommendations include studying the utility of alternative endpoints to resuscitation, reexamining plasma as a primary or adjunctive resuscitation fluid, and applying information about inflammation and endotheliopathy to target the underlying causes of burn shock. To simplify and improve temporal labeling, we fused APEX2 to the NL protein lamin-B1 to map proteins, RNA, and DNA. The identified NL-interacting/proximal RNAs show a long 3' UTR bias, a finding consistent with an observed bias toward longer 3' UTRs in genes deregulated in lamin-null cells. A C-rich motif was identified in these 3' UTR. Our APEX2-based proteomics identifies a C-rich motif binding regulatory protein that exhibits altered localization in lamin-null cells. Finally, we use APEX2 to map lamina-associated domains (LADs) during the cell cycle and uncover short, H3K27me3-rich variable LADs. Thus, the APEX2-based tools presented here permit identification of proteomes, transcriptomes, and genome elements associated with or proximal to the NL.Regarded as constitutively active enzymes, known to participate in many, diverse biological processes, the intracellular regulation bestowed on the CK1 family of serine/threonine protein kinases is critically important, yet poorly understood. Here, we provide an overview of the known CK1-dependent cellular functions and review the emerging roles of CK1-regulating proteins in these processes. We go on to discuss the advances, limitations and pitfalls that CK1 researchers encounter when attempting to define relationships between CK1 isoforms and their substrates, and the challenges associated with ascertaining the correct physiological CK1 isoform for the substrate of interest. With increasing interest in CK1 isoforms as therapeutic targets, methods of selectively inhibiting CK1 isoform-specific processes is warranted, yet challenging to achieve given their participation in such a vast plethora of signalling pathways. Here, we discuss how one might shut down CK1-specific processes, without impacting other aspects of CK1 biology. We assessed the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and genital human papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence, incidence, and clearance among female participants of the HITCH cohort study. We genotyped HPV DNA in vaginal samples and quantified baseline serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels using Roche's Linear Array and Total vitamin D assay, respectively. We used logistic and Cox proportional hazards models to respectively estimate adjusted odds ratios (OR) and hazards ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). There was no association between vitamin D levels (every 10ng/mL increase) at baseline and HPV prevalence (OR=0.88, CI0.73-1.03) or incidence (HR=0.88, CI0.73-1.06), but we observed a modest negative association with HPV clearance (HR=0.76, CI0.60-0.96).
