In this study, we analyzed the accidents associated with the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus Linnaeus) and issues pertaining to compensation in Xishuangbanna Nature Reserve from 2011 to 2018. We conducted interviews and a questionnaire survey with 217 villagers. The results show that (1) the main Asian elephants damage is crop loss (more than 95% of the total damage), and the villagers suffer economic losses; (2) through the influence of traditional culture and natural education, the majority of local villagers still have a favorable impression of Asian elephants; (3) female respondents, those engaged in agricultural production, those who had experienced crop loss and those who had never seen Asian elephants had more negative attitudes toward Asian elephants; (4) most villagers believe that the Asian elephant population has increased in the past decade; and (5) the villagers are quite passive in the human-elephant conflict, and most of them do not take action. Finally, based on the research results, this paper discusses the causes of human elephant conflict and proposes targeted mitigation measures.Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neural progenitor cells (NPCs) are promising tools to model complex neurological or psychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia. Multiple studies have compared patient-derived and healthy control NPCs derived from iPSCs in order to investigate cellular phenotypes of this disease, although the establishment, stabilization, and directed differentiation of iPSC lines are rather expensive and time-demanding. However, interrupted reprogramming by omitting the stabilization of iPSCs may allow for the generation of a plastic stage of the cells and thus provide a shortcut to derive NPSCs directly from tissue samples. Here, we demonstrate a method to generate shortcut NPCs (sNPCs) from blood mononuclear cells and present a detailed comparison of these sNPCs with NPCs obtained from the same blood samples through stable iPSC clones and a subsequent neural differentiation (classical NPCs-cNPCs). Peripheral blood cells were obtained from a schizophrenia patient and his two healthy parents (a case-parent trio), while a further umbilical cord blood sample was obtained from the cord of a healthy new-born. The expression of stage-specific markers in sNPCs and cNPCs were compared both at the protein and RNA levels. We also performed functional tests to investigate Wnt and glutamate signaling and the oxidative stress, as these pathways have been suggested to play important roles in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. We found similar responses in the two types of NPCs, suggesting that the shortcut procedure provides sNPCs, allowing an efficient screening of disease-related phenotypes.One application of personalized medicine is the tailoring of medication to the individual, so that the medication will have the highest chance of success. The Personal Genetic Locker project provides an approach to enable the use of personal genomic data in primary care. In this paper, we provide a description of the Personal Genetic Locker project and show its utility through a use case based on open standards, which is illustrated by the 4MedBox system.Natural killer (NK) cells play a pivotal role in cancer immune surveillance, and activating the receptor/ligand interaction may contribute to control the development and evolution of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We investigated the role of the natural killer group 2 member D (NKG2D) activating receptor and its ligand, the major histocompatibility complex class I chain-related protein A and B (MICA/B) in patients with cirrhosis and HCC subjected to surgical resection, patients with cirrhosis and no HCC, and healthy donors (HD). The NKG2D-mediated function was determined in peripheral blood (PB), in tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (NK-TIL), and in matched surrounding liver tissue (NK-LIL). A group of patients treated with sorafenib because of clinically advanced HCC was also studied. A humanized anti-MICA/B monoclonal antibody (mAb) was used in in vitro experiments to examine NK cell-mediated antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity. Serum concentrations of soluble MICA/B were evaluated by ELISA. IL-15 stimulation increased NKG2D-dependent activity which, however, remained dysfunctional in PB NK cells from HCC patients, in line with the reduced NKG2D expression on NK cells. NK-TIL showed a lower degranulation ability than NK-LIL, which was restored by IL-15 stimulation. Our findings highlight the key role of the NKG2D-MICA/B axis in the regulation of NK cell responses in HCC and provide evidence in support of a potentially important role of anti-MICA/B mAb and IL-15 stimulation in HCC immunotherapy.In this study, we performed a logistic regression analysis according to the frequency of participation in social leisure activities (education, clubs, social groups, volunteer activities, religious activities, and senior citizens' welfare center use) by men and women aged ≥ 65 years. We investigated the frequency of participation in social leisure activities and their association with the level of frailty (health vs. pre-frailty, health vs. frailty, pre-frailty vs. frailty). This study included 10,297 older adults (men 4128, women 6169) who participated in the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans, and were divided into three groups (healthy, pre-frailty, and frailty). Five frailty index components were used to measure the frailty level. There was a positive relationship between the elderly's religious activities, four times a week, from the healthy stage to the frailty stage, from the healthy stage to the pre-frailty stage, and from the pre-frailty stage to the frailty. In addition, positive associations emerged in leisure activities and club activities, respectively, from the healthy stage to the frailty stage (once a week, respectively).
