Elevated CRP was a significant risk factor for deep infection after ALIF, UTI after PLIF, and deep infection after lumbar discectomy in patients with a CCI ≤ 3. Pre-operative hypoalbuminemia and elevated CRP were significant risk factors for deep infection, UTI, and/or revision, after ALIF, PLIT, and/or lumbar discectomy. The antimicrobial activity and neuroprotective activity of these isolated compounds were also evaluated. To investigate the changes in choroidal thickness (CT) after acute cerebrospinal fluid pressure (CSFP) reduction in human subjects. Before and 15minutes after diagnostic lumbar puncture (LP), 44 patients underwent measurement of CT by swept-source optical coherence tomography. Thirty-two healthy volunteers imitated the body posture of LP procedure and underwent the same measurement before and 15minutes after body posture change. After CSFP reduction from 10.9±2.1mmHg at baseline to 8.1±1.5mmHg ( <0.001), CT decreased in subfoveal region ( =0.005), small to medium vessel layer (SMVL, <0.001), peripapillary regions in temporal ( =0.001), nasal ( <0.001), superior ( <0.001) and inferior ( <0.001), respectively. However, no significant change in CT in the control group after body posture change (all >0.05). A significant association between CSFP and the ratio of small to medium vessel layer to total choroidal thickness was found ( =0.009). The CSFP reduction rate was associated with the change rate of SMVL to total CT portion, for each percent decrease in CSFP was associated with a decrease by 0.22% in the rate of SMVL to total CT portion (R =0.125, =0.018). We emphasize how critical smell is and how the widespread loss of smell due to COVID-19 will impact human-system interaction. COVID-19 reduces the sense of smell in people who contract the disease. Thus far, olfaction has received relatively little attention from human factors/ergonomics professionals. While smell is not a primary means of human-system communication, humans rely on smell in many important ways related to both quality of life and safety. We briefly review and synthesize the rapidly expanding literature through September 2020 on the topic of smell loss caused by COVID-19. We interpret findings in terms of their relevance to human factors/ergonomics researchers and practitioners. Since March 2020 dozens of articles have been published that report smell loss in COVID-19 patients. The prevalence and duration of COVID-19-related smell loss is still under investigation, but the available data suggest that it may leave many people with long-term deficits and distortions in sense of smell. We suggest that the human factors/ergonomics community could become more aware of the importance of the sense of smell and focus on accommodating the increasing number of people with reduced olfactory performance. We present examples of how olfaction can augment human-system communication and how human factors/ergonomics professionals might accommodate people with olfactory dysfunction. Caring for a person living with dementia can take a physical and emotional toll, but understudied is the process by which family caregivers actually provide care. Caregiver management styles may vary and affect care decision-making, experiences, receptivity to and participation in interventions, and outcomes for the caregiver and person living with dementia. Participants included 100 primary family caregivers for persons with dementia who were on average 64years old and had been providing care for 55months, 74% women, and 18% nonwhite. Participants were interviewed in Michigan and Ohio regarding their cognitive and behavioral management of a recent care challenge and values guiding their decision-making. The rigorous and accelerated data reduction technique was used to analyze qualitative data leading to the identification of caregiving styles. Styles were compared across sample characteristics using chi-square and ANOVA tests. Five distinct styles emerged "Externalizers" (superficial understanding, self-focused, and frequent expressions of anger or frustration), "Individualists" (provide care by going alone, emotionally removed, and lack management strategies), "Learners" (recognize need to change their approach but are stuck and emotionally turbulent), "Nurturers" (positive affect and empathy toward care and reflect natural mastery), and "Adapters" (arsenal of acquired management strategies and adapt to challenges).
