CT is an essential diagnostic tool in health care. However, CT delivers relatively high levels of radiation which has been associated with an increased risk of childhood cancer. To address this, we evaluated patterns and time trends of CT use among children in Finland during the period in which changes in pediatric CT imaging practices were reported in several countries. Data on CTs performed on children younger than 15 years were obtained from Finland's largest eight hospitals. CT data included the period 1996-2010 with an estimated coverage of more than 80 % of pediatric CT imaging in Finland. Joinpoint regression was used for trends analysis. CT radiation doses were estimated based on a Finnish dosimetry survey. A total of 48,807 pediatric CTs were performed in 1996-2010. More boys (55.5 %) were scanned than girls (42.8 %). CT numbers increased up to 2002, then decreased significantly (-6.9 % per year, 95 % CI -10.4 to -3.2) towards 2005 and to a lesser extent thereafter, particularly among younger children. All CT types decreased in recent years, except for chest, spine, and extremities. The frequency of head CTs related to the diagnoses of intracranial injury, migraine and headache decreased towards the end of the study period. The estimated annual average effective dose from the three most common CT examinations was 0.004 mSv per child in the population. The frequency of pediatric CTs in Finland started to decrease after 2002. Apart from chest and orthopedic CTs, the utilization of pediatric CT imaging declined in recent years, most likely explained by improved awareness of medical radiation risks and reliance on alternative modalities such as MRI and ultrasound. Pre-school children are at a higher risk to acquire infectious diseases such as hand, foot and mouth disease due to their immature immune system. Good hand hygiene prevents transmission of infectious diseases. This study aimed to determine the knowledge and practices of hand hygiene among pre-schoolers. Methods. In this prospective, multi-center study, the pre-schools were selected according to the selection criteria. A questionnaire consisting of socio-demographics, knowledge and practices of hand hygiene were administered via face-to-face interview during the pre- and post-intervention period. A total of 435 pre-schoolers aged 5 and 6 years old from 2 pre-schools within Klang Valley, School P (test group) and School C (control group) were involved in this study. The test group was provided with comprehensive hand hygiene education including video on proper handwashing technique during the 2 months intervention period, whereas the control group did not receive any form of intervention. The data were statistically analyzed using descriptive analysis and independent t-test. Results. Majority of pre-schoolers gained knowledge of handwashing from their parents. However, only 63% demonstrated good handwashing technique. Test group were significantly better (P  less then  0.05) in handwashing technique and hand hygiene routine score. Conclusion. A comprehensive hand hygiene education program should include proper handwashing facilities, resources, and awareness of the care-givers in instilling and sustaining good hand hygiene behavior.Objective Studies show perceived health-related quality of life (HRQL) is associated with cardiovascular health (CVH) status; however, there is a limited understanding of underlying determinants of the CVH and HRQL of adults ≥50 years. Therefore, this study's objective was to examine social determinants of health (SDOH) associated with Michigan residents ≥50 years HRQL measures and CVH status. https://www.selleckchem.com/ATM.html Methods Michigan-level data was extracted from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System to complete the study's objective. The data were weighted to obtain state-level estimates. Multinomial and binary logistic regression analyses identified SDOH significantly associated with Michiganders ≥50 years CVH status and HRQL measures. Results The sample consisted of 10,889 participants. Compared to residents with a moderate CVH and mental health status, residents who reported unable to visit a doctor due to costs were two times more likely than those who were able to visit a provider to have a non-ideal CVH and mental health status (OR = 2.65; 95% CI 1.39-5.07). Discussion SDOH were significantly associated with non-ideal CVH and HRQL measures. Interventions that seek to address the CVH and perceive HRQL of residents ≥50 years should also address their underlying SDOH. Research should be performed to determine the generalizability of these findings.This study explored the lived experiences of an Omani nursing pioneer and nurse leader whose life and career have evolved amidst a time of rapid modernization in Oman that began in 1970, widely known as the Omani Renaissance. The life history method of qualitative research was used to examine personal and institutional facilitators and barriers to professional development, as well as aspects of the history of the nursing profession and healthcare in Oman during this time. This paper provides insight about the successes and challenges she faced in choosing nursing and along her career path. Inductive thematic analysis revealed three dominant themes opportunity, visionary, and nurse; with subthemes national identity, country building, nursing pioneer, leadership, perseverance, resilience, mentors, advocacy, caring, and fulfillment. Conclusions from this study are that opportunities, personal attributes, and motivations shaped decisions about employment and played a role in overcoming barriers to professional development in the workforce.Two-photon light-sheet microscopy (2P-SPIM) provides a unique combination of advantages for fast and deep fluorescence imaging in live tissues. Detecting coherent signals such as second-harmonic generation (SHG) in 2P-SPIM in addition to fluorescence would open further imaging opportunities. However, light-sheet microscopy involves an orthogonal configuration of illumination and detection that questions the ability to detect coherent signals. Indeed, coherent scattering from micron-sized structures occurs predominantly along the illumination beam. By contrast, point-like sources such as SHG nanocrystals can efficiently scatter light in multiple directions and be detected using the orthogonal geometry of a light-sheet microscope. This study investigates the suitability of SHG light-sheet microscopy (SHG-SPIM) for fast imaging of SHG nanoprobes. Parameters that govern the detection efficiency of KTiOPO4 and BaTiO3 nanocrystals using SHG-SPIM are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The effects of incident polarization, detection numerical aperture, nanocrystal rotational motion, and second-order susceptibility tensor symmetries on the detectability of SHG nanoprobes in this specific geometry are clarified.
