The findings indicate that multiple factors influence length of stay and readmission. Identifying these factors provides useful evidence for clinicians and policy makers to design more targeted and cost-effective interventions.Social distancing is the most visible public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but its implications for mental health are unknown. In a nationwide online sample of 435 U.S. adults, conducted in March 2020 as the pandemic accelerated and states implemented stay-at-home orders, we examined whether stay-at-home orders and individuals' personal distancing behavior were associated with symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), intrusive thoughts, insomnia, and acute stress. Stay-at-home order status and personal distancing were independently associated with higher symptoms, beyond protective effects of available social resources (social support and social network size). A subsample of 118 participants who had completed symptom measures earlier in the outbreak (February 2020) showed increases in depression and GAD between February and March, and personal distancing behavior was associated with these increases. Findings suggest that there are negative mental health correlates of social distancing, which should be addressed in research, policy, and clinical approaches to the COVID-19 pandemic.We assessed the prevalence/comorbidities of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Korean servicemen using the Epidemiological Survey of Mental Health in Military Service in Korea. A total of 3,441 participants were assessed for adult ADHD, depression, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, somatization, insomnia, suicidality, cigarette dependence, and alcohol dependence using a self-report scale. Participants were also asked to rank their perception of their career prospects, health status, and quality of life on a Likert scale. Participants were classified as ADHD according to the WHO A-ADHD self-report scale. Firth multiple logistic regression and Cochran-Armitage trend tests were used to identify the risks of comorbidities and trends of self-perception between the two groups. ADHD (prevalence 2.8%) was significantly associated with social anxiety (OR, 40.52; 95% CI 25.14-65.74), generalized anxiety (OR, 28.21; 95% CI 17.37-45.69), depression (OR, 16.36; 95% CI 10.50-25.52), somatization (OR, 14.47; 95% CI 9.21-22.76), suicidality (OR, 11.03; 95% CI 6.67-17.86), and insomnia (OR, 5.92; 95% CI 3.68-9.35). Servicemen with ADHD had negative perceptions (p less then 0.001) of their career prospects, health status, and quality of life compared to servicemen without ADHD. It is essential to revise the enlistment criteria for individuals with ADHD or to develop management programs for servicemen with ADHD.The current COVID-19 pandemic is not only a threat to physical health, but also brings a burden to mental health in the general Chinese population. However, the temporal change of mental health status due to pandemic-related stress in relation to protective and risk factors to hostility is less known. This study was implemented at two timepoints, i.e., during the peak and the remission of the COVID-19 pandemic. 3233 Chinese individuals participated in the first wave, and among them 1390 participants were followed in a second wave. The result showed that fear significantly decreased over time, while depression level significantly increased during the second wave compared to the first wave of the survey. Younger age, lower-income, increased level of perceived stress, and current quarantine experience were significant predictors of depression escalation. Younger people and individuals who had a higher initial stress response tended to show more hostility. Furthermore, the use of negative coping strategy plays a potential intermediating role in the stress-related increase in hostility, while social support acts as a buffer in hostility in the general population under high stress. As the whole world is facing the same pandemic, this research provides several implications for public mental health intervention.The evaluation of thiamine and its derivative phosphate esters levels in pregnant women in rural communities can contribute not only for understanding the specific characteristics of this population regarding nutritional aspects, but also for clarifying the relations of psychiatric manifestations and a vitamin deficit. In the present work we assessed sociodemographic variables, psychiatric parameters and thiamine and its derivative in the whole blood of women in a rural, low-income community in Brazil. The supportive services implemented by the Mount Sinai Hospital System in New York for its workers culminated in the founding of the Mount Sinai Center for Stress, Resilience, and Personal Growth (CSRPG). CSRPG is an innovative mental health and resilience-building service that includes strong community engagement, self- and clinician-administered screening, peer co-led resilience training workshops, and care matching. The long-term sustainability of similar programs across the United States will require federal funding.We examine the use of a z2 flow distribution and collection feature for enhancing the separation efficiency of a laterally-fed membrane chromatography (or LFMC) device. The new device is designated z2LFMC. Two devices were fabricated using two different ion-exchange membranes strong anion exchange (Q) with 0.8-micron pore size, and strong cation exchange (S) with pore size in the 3-5 µm range. The number of theoretical plates per unit membrane bed height in these z2LFMC devices were higher than those reported for other membrane chromatography devices housing similar membranes, including the older versions of LFMC devices. The enhancement in separation efficiency is explained based on computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. Model protein separation experiments showed that the z2LFMC device gave similar resolution as an equivalent resin-packed column, at 40-time greater flow rate than that used with the column. At a comparable flow rate, the resolution obtained with the z2LFMC device was significantly higher than that obtained with the equivalent resin-packed column.
