For their biocompatibility profile, we studied their interaction with red blood cells (RBCs) through hemolysis assay and we monitored their structural alterations through SEM. The antimicrobial activity was tested with the agar diffusion disc assay for Gram negative and Gram positive microorganisms E. coli and S. aureus respectively. Nanoparticles' (NPs) internalization and localization studies in cancer cells were monitored with fluorescence microscopy in MCF-7 and U87-MG. According to our results it is worth it to investigate the potential of these nanomaterials since they can have a significant role in applications of theranostics in nanomedicine.In the summer of 2014, a multistate outbreak of listeriosis associated with contaminated stone fruit (peach and nectarine) was reported. A serotype 4b variant Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) strain of singleton Sequence Type (ST) 382 was isolated from clinical samples and stone fruit associated with the outbreak. A serotype 1/2b Lm strain of ST5, Clonal Complex 5 was isolated only from outbreak-associated stone fruit, not from clinical samples. Here we investigated the fate of the serotype 4b and 1/2b strains, at two inoculation levels (high level at 3.7 logCFU/fruit and low level at 2.7 logCFU/fruit), on the surfaces of white peach, yellow peach and yellow nectarine stored at 4 °C for 26 days. Among HIV-negative individuals, misinformation and prejudicial attitudes about HIV can fuel stigma and contribute to discrimination against PLWH. Antenatal care (ANC), with its focus on universal HIV testing, provides a unique entry point to address HIV stigma. This study describes the development of a counseling intervention to address HIV stigma among women and their partners attending a first ANC appointment in Tanzania. Formative work to inform the intervention consisted of qualitative interviews with 32 pregnant and postpartum women (both women living with HIV and HIV-negative women) and 20 healthcare workers. Data were analyzed iteratively, using a thematic analysis approach, to identify intervention targets. The resulting intervention, Maisha (Swahili for "Life"), includes three sessions informed by the HIV Stigma Framework and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy a video and brief counseling session prior to HIV testing and, for those who test seropositive for HIV, two additional sessions building on the video content. A pilot test of the intervention is in process. Addressing HIV stigma at the first ANC visit can help individuals living with HIV to overcome stigma-related barriers to the initiation and maintenance of HIV care, and can reduce stigmatizing attitudes among those who test negative for HIV.Two bacterial strains isolated from soil, namely Agreia sp. D1110 and Microbacterium trichothecenolyticum D2006, were found to produce a novel oligosaccharide. The oligosaccharide was enzymatically produced from dextran using the culture supernatant of Agreia sp. D1110 or M. trichothecenolyticum D2006. LC-MS and NMR analysis identified the novel oligosaccharide as cyclo-→6)-α-d-Glcp-(1→6)-α-d-Glcp-(1→6)-α-d-Glcp-(1→6)-α-d-Glcp-(1→, which was named cycloisomaltotetraose, and abbreviated as CI4. CI4 was subsequently crystalized and its X-ray crystallographic structure was determined. CI4 crystals were shown to be pentahydrate, with the CI4 molecules in the crystal structure displaying a unique 3D structure, in which two glucosyl residues in the molecule were facing each other. This unique 3D structure was quite different from the 3D structure of known cyclic tetrasaccharides. This is the first report of CI4 molecules and their unique crystal structure.The recovery of microalgae by means of coagulation-flocculation is efficient, simple and low operating costs. The addition of coagulants makes it possible to destabilize the microalgae surface loads and recover their biomass. Chemical coagulants can contaminate the environment and negatively affect human health. Thus, the exploration of natural coagulants, such as Moringa oleifera and Guazuma ulmifolia, are innovative. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of biomass separation from the microalgae Scenedesmus obliquuos by means of coagulation-flocculation. M. oleifera and G. ulmifolia were used in order to optimize the variables dose, pH and settling time, through a central composite rotational design, which presented recovery efficiencies above 80.0% and 60.0%, respectively. In relation to M. oleifera, optimum regions were obtained for biomass recovery at both pH 4.0 with a dose of 40.0 mg L-1 and pH 9.0 with a dose of 80.0 mg L-1, both in 30 min of settling times. For G. ulmifolia, an optimum dose of 30.0 mg L-1 at pH 4.0 with a 3 min settling time demonstrated that this new coagulant for microalgae recovery has potential for application. Thus, these natural coagulants are promising and can be used in coagulation-flocculation to recover biomass from Scenedesmus obliquuos and, thus, minimize the use of synthetic or metallic products.Eye movement research has shown that attention shifts from the currently fixated location to the next before a saccade is executed. We investigated whether the cost of the attention shift depends on higher-order processing at the time of fixation, in particular on visual working memory load differences between fixations and refixations on task-relevant items. The attention shift is reflected in EEG activity in the saccade-related potential (SRP). In a free viewing task involving visual search and memorization of multiple targets amongst distractors, we compared the SRP in first fixations versus refixations on targets and distractors. The task-relevance of targets implies that more information will be loaded in memory (e.g. both identity and location) than for distractors (e.g. location only). First fixations will involve greater memory load than refixations, since first fixations involve loading of new items, while refixations involve rehearsal of previously visited items. The SRP in the interval preceding the saccade away from a target or distractor revealed that saccade preparation is affected by task-relevance and refixation behavior.
