Abnormalities in bone development in humans and non-humans can lead to impaired physical and psychological health; however, evidence is lacking regarding the role of individual psychosocial factors in the development of poor bone conditions. Addressing this lack of knowledge, we used low-productive laying hens (n = 93) and assessed behavioral responses to an open-field test [at 17, 18, 29, 33 weeks of age (wa)], an aerial predator test (at 39 wa), and a social reinstatement test (at 42 wa). Bone condition was assessed using a palpation technique on five occasions (at 16, 29, 33, 45, 58 wa), with half of the hens experiencing damage (deviations, fractures, or both) at 29 wa and all hens by 58 wa. Corticosterone (CORT) concentration in feathers (at 16, 33, 58 wa) and body weight (at 23, 47, 58 wa) were also investigated. We hypothesized that lighter birds (at 23 wa) with higher CORT (at 16 wa) and open field-induced fear collected before the onset of lay (at 17 and 18 wa) are associated with a worse bone condittration.In the Swiss pig sector, the usage of antimicrobials has been recorded, evaluated and systematically reduced on a voluntary basis since 2015. This monitoring has been carried out using various methods thereby enabling continuous national scrutiny as well as international comparisons. To gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the antimicrobial usage on Swiss farms, consumption data of farrow-to-finish farms were analyzed for (i) the within-herd relationships among different age categories and (ii) the influence of the herd size. The data were collected on 71 farms for the year 2017, encompassing the amount of active ingredients and number of defined daily doses Switzerland (nDDDch) in total, and stratified for the different age categories of piglets, weaners, fattening pigs, and sows. The differences in nDDDch per animal among the age categories were determined by a Wilcoxon test and subsequent post-hoc analysis according to Bonferroni. The within-herd relationship among the individual age categories arest regarding the potential reduction in antimicrobial usage. Likewise, larger farms with higher management requirements were found to be of particular importance for the reduction of antimicrobial usage. Monitoring programs should therefore evaluate different age categories separately to identify problems for individual farms.Theoretical analyses are valuable for the exploration of the effects of unnatural amino acids on enzyme functions; however, many necessary parameters for unnatural amino acids remain lacking. In this study, we developed and tested force field parameters compatible with Amber ff14SB for 18 phenylalanine and tyrosine derivatives. The charge parameters were derived from ab initio calculations using the RESP fitting approach and then adjusted to reproduce the benchmark relative energies (at the MP2/TZ level) of the α- and β-backbones for each unnatural amino acid dipeptide. The structures optimized under the proposed force field parameters for the 18 unnatural amino acid dipeptides in both the α- and β-backbone forms were in good agreement with their QM structures, as the average RMSD was as small as 0.1 Å. Recent studies validated that anthrax toxin receptor 1 (ANTXR1) is aberrantly expressed in several cancers and holds promise as a new therapeutic target for cancer. However, its immunological roles in GC are still unclear. Here, we show that we identify the distinct stromal and immune cell infiltration in GC between the high and low ANTXR1 expression group by analyzing genomic data. Clinically, ANTXR1 is highly expressed in GC and correlates with adverse clinicopathological characteristics. Therefore, it is quite important to predict drug-related properties (druggable properties) for candidate CSMs. Currently, a number of druggable properties (e.g., logP and pKa) can be calculated by in silico methods; still the identification of druggable CSMs is a high-risk task, and new quantitative metrics for the druggable potential of CSMs are increasingly needed. Here, we present normalized bond energy (NBE), a new metric for the above purpose. By applying NBE to the DrugBank CSMs whose properties are largely known, we revealed that NBE is able to describe a number of critical druggable properties including logP, pKa, membrane permeability, blood-brain barrier penetration, and human intestinal absorption. Moreover, given that the human endogenous metabolites can serve as important resources for drug discovery, we applied NBE to the metabolites in the Human Metabolome Database. As a result, NBE showed a significant difference in metabolites from various body fluids and was correlated with some important properties, including melting point and water solubility.Introduction Incisional hernia development after open abdomen therapy (OAT) remains a common complication in the long run. To demonstrate the feasibility, we describe our method of prophylactic onlay mesh implantation with definitive fascial closure after open abdomen therapy (PROMOAT). To display the feasibility of this concept, we evaluated the short-term outcome after absorbable and non-absorbable synthetic mesh implantation as prophylactic onlay. Material and Methods Ten patients were prospectively enrolled, and prophylactic onlay mesh (long-term absorbable or non-absorbable) was implanted at the definitive fascial closure operation. The cohort was followed up with a special focus on incisional hernia development and complications. Results OAT duration was 21.0 ± 12.6 days (95% CI 16.9-25.1). Definitive fascial closure was achieved in all cases. No incisional hernias were present during a follow-up interval of 12.4 ± 10.8 months (range 1-30 months). Two seromas and one infected hematoma occurred. The outcome did not differ between mesh types.
