The SARS-Cov-2 pandemic requires special attention on its psychological effects and the impact on patients with chronic pain. This study aimed at examining the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic-associated regulations initiated by the German government on pain intensity and characteristics, emotional well-being, and everyday life of patients with painful polyneuropathy. Forty-three patients (well assessed with questionnaires before the pandemic and without change of their health status between baseline and current assessment) were investigated with validated, self-reported questionnaires and COVID-19-specific items 2 weeks after the regulations came into effect. Pain intensity remained stable or even improved like the neuropathic pain symptom inventory total score (t0 33.54 ± 20.48 vs t1 27.38 ± 16.16, = 0.008). Only 11.6% reported a pandemic-associated pain worsening. Cancer-related pain is often challenging to manage, with limitations of analgesic drugs including incomplete efficacy and dose-related adverse effects. Given problems with, and limitations of, opioid use for cancer-related pain, the identification of nonopioid treatment strategies that could improve cancer pain care is an attractive concept. The hypothesis that combinations of mechanistically distinct analgesic drugs could provide superior analgesia and/or fewer adverse effects has been tested in several pain conditions, including in cancer-related pain. Here, we propose to review trials of nonopioid analgesic combinations for cancer-related pain. Using a predefined literature search strategy, trials-comparing the combination of 2 or more nonopioid analgesics with at least one of the combination's individual components-will be searched on the PubMed and EMBASE databases from their inception until the date the searches are run. Outcomes will include pain intensity or relief, adverse effects, and concomitant opioid consumption. Deferring elective joint replacement surgeries for an unknown period is likely to decrease the incidence of infection with SARS-CoV-2 but is likely to have detrimental effects in individuals suffering from chronic knee pain. These detrimental effects extend beyond the discomfort of osteoarthritis (OA) and the inconvenience of rescheduling surgery. Disabling pain is a driving factor for individuals to seek medical intervention, including pharmacological palliative treatment and surgical procedures. The need for surgical intervention due to chronic pain as for knee and hip replacement is now put on hold indefinitely because access to surgical care has been limited. Although a moderate delay in surgical intervention may not produce a significant progression of OA within the knee, it could lead to muscle wasting due to immobility and exacerbate comorbidities, making rehabilitation more challenging. Importantly, it will have an impact on comorbidities driven by OA severity, notably decreased quality of life and depression. These patients with unremitting pain become increasingly susceptible to substance use disorders including opioids, alcohol, as well as prescription and illegal drugs. Facial expressions of pain serve an essential social function by communicating suffering and soliciting aid. Accurate visual perception of painful expressions is critical because the misperception of pain signals can have serious clinical and social consequences. Therefore, it is essential that researchers have access to high-quality, diverse databases of painful expressions to better understand accuracy and bias in pain perception. This article describes the development of a large-scale face stimulus database focusing on expressions of pain. We collected and normed a database of images of models posing painful facial expressions. We also characterized these stimuli in terms of the presence of a series of pain-relevant facial action units. In addition to our primary database of posed expressions, we provide a separate database of computer-rendered expressions of pain that may be applied to any neutral face photograph. The resulting database comprises 229 unique (and now publicly available) painful expressions.
