The importance of supplementary motor area (SMA) for motor function and compensation for primary motor area (M1) has received increased attention. We used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to evaluate structure and function of corticospinal projection originating from SMA. Fibers of corticospinal projection originating from M1 (CST) and SMA (ACST) were analyzed. ACST originating from mesial SMA area formed separate white matter bundles leaving the anterior part of M1 area, which then entered the posterior limb of the internal capsule. Projection and overlap of both CST and ACST were detected on medulla. Fibers of contralesional ACST were more than that of ipsilesional ACST in patients with SMA tumors (p<0.05). In patients with SMA tumor, all patients experienced temporary akinesia postoperatively. Seven hundred forty-one fibers of ipsilateral ACST and no fibers of ipsilateral CST were detected in the patient with M1 glioma, while most of contralateral limb movement was preserved. MEP could be evoked by stimulating SMA area as well as M1 area. ACST originated from SMA area and projected to the medial medulla. SMA area and ACST integrity contributed to contralateral motor function and were a compensation for M1 lesion and damaged CST. To verify and integrate the prevalence and phenotype of abnormalities in the sellar region in patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) using MRI data. We searched PubMed and EMBASE up to December 14, 2020. The inclusion criteria were as follows (1) pediatric patients diagnosed with nonacquired GHD and (2) detailed data sufficient to assess the proportion of sellar and parasellar abnormalities on brain MRI scans. Finally, thirty-two studies with 39,060 children (mean or median age, 3.4-14.1 years) were included. The number and type of MRI findings from all included studies were pooled by two authors. The heterogeneity across studies was evaluated with the Q test or the inconsistency index (I ) statistic. Subgroup analyses were performed according to the type of GHD (isolated GHD [IGHD] vs. multiple pituitary hormone deficiency [MPHD]), MRI magnet, geographical region, and cutoff serum growth hormone (GH) level. The pooled proportion of sellar and parasellar abnormalities was 58.0% (95% CI, 47.1-68.6%; I , 98.2%). The MPHD group showed a higher proportion of sellar and parasellar abnormalities and pituitary stalk interruption syndrome than the IGHD group (91.4% vs. 40.1%, P<0.001; 65.3% vs. 20.1%, P<0.001). The patients in studies with low peak GH levels on stimulation tests were more associated with severe MR abnormalities (cutoff GH ≤ 5 μg/l vs. cutoff GH = 10 μg/l; 72.8 % vs. 38.0%; P<0.001). Owing to the refractory infections caused by S. epidermidis biofilms and persisters in immunosuppressed patients, it is crucial to develop new antimicrobials. In the present study, we analyzed the antimicrobial effects of the thrombopoietin receptor agonist eltrombopag (EP) against S. epidermidis planktonic cells, biofilms, and persister cells. EP was significantly toxic to S. epidermidis with the minimal inhibitory concentration of 8 μg/ml, and effectively inhibited the biofilms and persisters in a strain-dependent manner. In addition, EP was only mildly toxic to mammalian cells after 12 to 24 h treatment. It also partially synergized with vancomycin against S. epidermidis, which enhanced its antimicrobial effects and reduced its toxicity to mammalian cells. Taken together, EP is a potential antibiotic for treating refractory infections caused by S. epidermidis.Here we report on the heritability and Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICCs) of brain volumes in 1,103 young healthy adults with mean age 29.2 years. Among them are 153 monozygotic (MZ) twin pairs and 86 dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs, 133 non-twin siblings of MZ twins, 76 non-twin siblings of DZ twins, 335 siblings, and 81 unrelated individuals. ICCs were calculated between pairs of the following genetic groups (1) MZ twins; (2) DZ twins; (3) MZ twins-their singleton siblings; (4) DZ twins-their singleton siblings; (5) siblings (SB); and (6) unrelated individuals (NR). We studied 4 brain groups global, lobar, subcortical, and cortical brain regions. For each of 4 brain groups we found the same order of ICCs ranging from the highest values for MZ twins, statistically significantly smaller for the DZ twins and 3 sibling groups, and practically zero for NR. The DZ twins and 3 sibling groups were not different. No hemispheric difference was found in any genetic group. Among brain groups, the highest heritability was for the global regions, followed by lobar and subcortical groups.
