Treatment-emergent adverse events were mostly mild in severity, and vadadustat was generally well tolerated. In conclusion, moderate hepatic impairment did not significantly impact vadadustat systemic exposure, and mild hepatic impairment is unlikely to alter vadadustat exposure. In the primary study, women who received opioids as inpatients were queried about their pain management, including questions about pain experience, pain satisfaction, perceived areas for practice improvement, and the opportunity to leave additional comments. Participants who were prescribed opioids upon discharge completed postdischarge surveys with a similar opportunity for qualitative input. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method to identify themes and subthemes. Of the 493 women enrolled in the primary analysis, 125 provided qualitative data. Three overarching themes regarding pain management were identifielicited. These findings stress the importance of open and frequent dialogue between patients and providers and a need for multimodal pain management options. Individuals who hike the entire length of the trail in one season (4-6 months) perform long daily exercise durations while exposed to extreme environmental temperatures, high altitudes, intense solar radiation, and the consumption of calorie-rich, nutrient-poor diets. This case study reports changes in arterial function and body composition in a subject before and after a 112-day long-distance hike of the PCT. Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation, a measure of vascular endothelial function, decreased from 6.97% to 5.00%. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, a measure of aortic stiffness, increased from 5.39 to 5.76 m/s. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans detected no major changes in total-body bone mineral density, fat mass, or lean mass, although there were minor, unfavorable changes in some subregions of the body. D-Dimer was > 0.5 μg/mL (upper limit of normal) in 25 (93%) patients at admission; 11 (41%) developed peak D-dimer > 5 μg/mL during admission. Seven (26%) patients developed venous thromboembolism three with deep vein thrombosis and four with pulmonary embolism. Requirement of increased ventilatory support was a risk factor for thrombosis (P = 0.006). Three of eight (38%) patients on prophylactic anticoagulation developed thrombosis; however, no patients developed VTE on low-molecular-weight heparin prophylaxis titrated to anti-Xa level. Manifestation of COVID-19 disease was severe or critical in 16 (59%) patients. Four (15%) patients died of COVID-19 complications all had comorbidities. Elevated D-dimer and increased VTE rate were observed in this young cohort, particularly in those with severe respiratory complications, suggesting thrombotic coagulopathy. Electronic surveys were distributed to senior hospital administrators at 94 hospitals in rural Kansas from June to July 2019. The survey included both open and closed-ended questions related to scope of CNM privileges, collaborative agreements, and forecasted trends in the CNM workforce in rural Kansas. Fifty-six hospitals completed the survey. Only one hospital reported having CNM-attended births. Twenty-eight of 37 hospital administrators agreed CNMs should have collaborative agreements with physicians. Most respondents did not anticipate the number of CNMs with privileges to increase at their hospitals over the next 5 years. Future research should focus on understanding the factors limiting CNM expansion in rural Kansas, because CNMs represent an untapped, additional maternity care workforce for rural Kansas.
