We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and MedRxiv up to July 29, 2020, to identify all studies reporting clinical information on adult and pediatric IBD patients with confirmed COVID-19. Twenty-three studies met our inclusion criteria, including 243,760 IBD patients. COVID-19 was diagnosed in 1028 patients (509 with Crohn's disease [49.5%], 428 with ulcerative colitis [41.6%], 49 with indeterminate colitis [4.8%], and 42 with missing data [4.1%]), accounting for a cumulative prevalence of 0.4%. Viral infection occurred more frequently in males than in females (56.5% vs 39.7%), and the mean age ranged from 14 to 85 years. The most common symptoms were fever (48.3%), cough (46.5%), and diarrhea (20.5%), and a COVID-19 diagnosis was achieved mainly through polymerase chain reaction analysis of nasopharyngeal swabs (94.4%) and chest computed tomography scans (38.9%). Hydroxychloroquine (23.9%), lopinavir/ritonavir (8.2%), steroids (3.2%), and antibiotics (3.1%) were the most used drugs. Overall, approximately a third of patients were hospitalized (30.6%), and 11.4% of them required admission to the intensive care unit. The accuracy of ultrasound for evaluation of individual colorectal segments in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) has not been evaluated in a systematic review. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound in different colorectal segments of patients with IBD. We searched publication databases from inception through March 2019 for studies that assessed the accuracy of ultrasound in detection of inflammation in right, transverse, and left colon and in rectum in patients with IBD, using findings from colonoscopy as the reference standard. Subgroup analyses were performed including IBD type, patient age, body mass index, and study design. The risk of bias was assessed with the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 tool. Nineteen studies (1101 patients) were included in the qualitative synthesis. After we assessed the risk of bias, 7 studies (comprising 84 patients with Crohn's disease and 420 patients with ulcerative colitis) were included in the meta-analysis. Bowel wall thickness ≥ 3 mm identified colorectal segments with inflammation with 86.4% pooled sensitivity (95% CI, 76.1%-92.7%) and 88.3% pooled specificity (95% CI, 58.1%-97.6%). In rectum only, bowel wall thickness ≥ 3 mm identified inflammation with 74.5% sensitivity (95% CI, 53.0%-88.3%) and 69.5% specificity (95% CI, 33.6%-91.1%). Diagnostic accuracy was comparable among subgroups. Increased bowel wall flow and loss of stratification had higher true-positive odds ratios. Prenatal ethanol exposure (PEE) has been shown to alter the level and function of receptors in the brain, one of which is GABA receptors (GABA R), the major inhibitory ligand gated ion channels that mediate neuronal inhibition. High dose PEE in animals resulted in the upregulation of GABA R, but the effects of low and moderate dose PEE at early gestation have not been investigated. This study aimed at examining GABA R density in the adult mouse brain following PEE during a period equivalent to the first 3 to 4weeks in human gestation. It was hypothesized that early moderate PEE would cause alterations in brain GABA R levels in the adult offspring. C57BL/6J mice were given 10% v/v ethanol during the first 8 gestational days. Male offspring were studied using in-vivo Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), biodistribution, in-vitro autoradiography using [ F]AH114726, a novel flumazenil analogue with a high affinity for the benzodiazepine-binding site, and validated using immunohistochemistry. In vivo PET and biodistribution did not detect alteration in brain tracer uptake. In vitro radiotracer studies detected significantly reduced GABA R in the olfactory bulbs. Immunohistochemistry detected reduced GABA R in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum and hippocampus, while Nissl staining showed that cell density was significantly higher in the striatum following PEE. Early moderate PEE may induce long-term alterations in the GABA R system that persisted into adulthood.
