This study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of Moringa oleifera leaves extract (MOLE) to improve the characters of fresh and cryopreserved semen of Barki rams compared to vitamin E and Selenium combination. Twenty-four mature Barki rams (50-70 Kg) were randomly assigned into three groups, eight rams each. The first group was given distilled water orally. The second group was given MOLE orally daily at a dose of 40 mg/kg. The third group was injected with a combination of vitamin E and selenium at a dose of 3 ml (4.5 mg sodium selenite and 204 mg vitamin E)/head i.m twice a week for 64 days. Moringa oleifera leaves extract increased semen volume, sperm concentration, activities of seminal plasma catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP), levels of ascorbic acid and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). In addition, it significantly increased post thawing sperms motility, viability index, membrane integrity, and the activities of post thawing semen antioxidant enzymes. While it decreased seminal plasma concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) and acrosomal defects and DNA fragmentation of sperm in cryopreserved semen. Vitamin E and selenium decreased semin volume, sperm concentration, seminal plasma ascorbic acid, TAC concentrations and activities of antioxidant enzymes while it increased sperm abnormalities, DNA fragmentation and MDA concentration in seminal plasma. This study indicated that Moringa oleifera leaves extract improved the characters of the fresh and cryopreserved semen of Barki rams via improving seminal plasma antioxidant defense mechanism.As a crucial part of the symbiotic system, the gut microbiome is metabolically connected to many diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Trimethylamine (TMA) is produced by gut bacteria from dietary choline, betaine, or L-carnitine, and is then converted in the liver to Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), which in turn affects hepatic and intestinal lipid metabolism. Circulating TMAO is positively associated with CVD risk. Because eggs are rich in choline, it has been speculated that their consumption may increase plasma TMAO. In this study, we hypothesized that 2 eggs per day increases plasma TMAO level by altering gut microbiome composition in mildly hypercholesterolemic postmenopausal women. In this randomized, cross-over study, 20 overweight, postmenopausal women were given 2 whole eggs and the equivalent amount of yolk-free substitute as breakfast for 4 weeks, in randomized order, with a 4-week washout in between. Fasting blood draws and stool were collected at the beginning and end of each treatment period. Plasma TMAO, choline, betaine and other metabolites were analyzed using LC/MS, while gut microbiome composition was analyzed using 16S amplicon sequencing. Plasma choline and betaine were significantly increased after whole egg but not yolk-free substitute, however TMAO level was not significantly affected by treatments. Gut microbiome composition showed large inter-individual variability at baseline and in response to the treatments. The consumption of 2 eggs per day in overweight, postmenopausal mildly hypercholesterolemic women significantly increased plasma choline and betaine, but did not increase plasma TMAO or alter gut microbiome composition.We investigated the effects of two California wildfires (Rocky and Wragg Fires, 2015) compared to an unburned reference watershed on water quality, dissolved organic matter (DOM), and precursors of disinfection by-products (DBPs) for two years' post-fire. The two burned watersheds both experienced wildfires but differed in the proportion of burned watershed areas. Burned watersheds showed rapid water quality degradation from elevated levels of turbidity, color, and suspended solids, with greater degradation in the more extensively burned watershed. During the first year's initial flushes, concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), ammonium (NH4+/NH3), and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA254) were significantly higher (67 ± 40%, 418 ± 125%, 192 ± 120%, and 31 ± 17%, respectively) in the more extensively burned watershed compared to the reference watershed. These elevated values gradually declined and finally returned to levels like the reference watershed in the second year. Nitrate concentrations were near detection limits (0.01 mg-N/L) in the first year but showed a large increase in fire-impacted streams during the second rainy season, possibly due to delayed nitrification. Changes in DOM composition, especially during the initial storm events, indicated that fires can attenuate humic-like and soluble microbial by-product-like (SMP) DOM while increasing the proportion of fulvic-like, tryptophan-like, and tyrosine-like compounds. Elevated bromide (Br-) concentrations (up to 8.7 μM]) caused a shift in speciation of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) to brominated species for extended periods (up to 2 years). Wildfire also resulted in elevated concentrations of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) precursors.
