The Egyptian cotton leaf worm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.), is a major agricultural lepidopterous pest causing extensive damage in a variety of crops including vegetable, cotton, fodder, and fiber crops. Heat shock protein (HSP) family members play important roles in protecting insects against environmental stressors. In this study, we characterized three putative heat shock proteins (SpliHsp70, SpliHsp90, and SpliHSF) from S. littoralis and analyzed their expression levels in response to heat, cold, ultraviolet irradiation, Bacillus thuringiensis, and Spodoptera littoralis nucleopolyhedrovirus treatments. Significant upregulation of SpliHsp70 was observed in female pupae, while the highest expression levels of SpliHsp90 and SpliHSF were found in female adults. Heat shock triggered increases in SpliHsp levels compared to cold treatment. SpliHsp90 exhibited the highest expression levels during the first 30 min of UV treatment. Both bacterial and viral pathogenic agents effected the regulation of Hsps in S. littoralis. These findings suggest that SpliHsp genes might play significant roles in the response to biotic and abiotic stress, as well as in the regulation of developmental stages. The impact of inhibition of multidrug resistance protein 4 (MRP4) on nitric oxide (NO) resistance and on ADP-induced platelet aggregation is unknown. The aim of this investigation was to verify whether platelet NO resistance correlates with MRP4 expression and evaluate whether this can be reduced by in vitro MRP4 inhibition mediated by cilostazol. Moreover, we assessed if inhibition of MRP4-mediated transport reduces ADP-induced platelet reactivity. The inhibitory effect of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO-donor that enhances cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) cytosolic concentration, was assessed in platelets obtained from aspirin treated patients and in a control population. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ve-822.html The inhibitory effect of SNP was evaluated by ADP-induced aggregation in SNP-treated platelets. The impact of MRP4 on ADP-induced platelet aggregation was performed in high on aspirin residual platelet reactivity (HARPR) patients and compared to healthy volunteers (HV), and a control cohort (CTR). In aspirin-treated patients with high levels of MRP4, reduced SNP inhibition was found compared to those with low levels of MRP4. MRP4 inhibition by cilostazol significantly reduced ADP-induced platelet aggregation in HARPR population, and to a lesser extent in HV and CTR populations. In conclusion, cilostazol can mitigate the hyper-reactive platelet phenotype of HARPR patients by reducing residual ADP-induced platelet aggregation and increasing NO-dependent endothelial antiplatelet effects.Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element within human beings that hold with crucial biological functions. Investigating the complex origin of soil Se is of great importance to scientifically approach the land use of Se-rich land use, and the respective promotion of regional economic development. In this study, 160 soil samples from 10 profiles in farmland and woodland were collected in Hailun city, which is a typical black soil region in Northeast China, in order to characterize the distribution and speciation of Se in the black soil, and to identify the origin of soil Se. The total selenium content in the soil ranges from 0.045 to 0.444 μg g-1, with an average selenium content in black soil (0.318 μg g-1) of three times greater than that found in the yellow-brown soil (0.114 μg g-1). The land-use type has a significant influence on the distribution of selenium in the black soil. Moreover, Se and heavy metals have a significant (positive or negative) correlation, in which TOC plays an important role. The black soil presents a consistent REE distribution pattern with underlying yellow-brown soil indicating black soil originates from yellow-brown soil. REE geostatistical analysis suggests that the soil Se partly originates from shale weathering and enriches in black soil. Moreover, elemental geochemical analysis and XRD results show that the paleoclimate change from humid and warm to dry and cold is favorable for organic matter accumulation, resulting in less leaching and enhanced adsorption of selenium into the black soil. This study investigated levels and sources of pollution and potential health risks associated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban street dust collected from Tyumen city, a large transport centre with one of the highest motorization rates in Russia. Twenty street dust samples were collected from four grades of roads in five different land use areas. Research methods included measurements of physical and chemical properties of street dust, concentrations of 18 PTEs using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, 12 PAHs using high-performance liquid chromatography, and statistical analysis of the data. Concentrations of Ni, Cr, Sb, and Mo, as well as medium and high molecular weight PAHs in urban street dust, were notably higher than in soils within the city, which indicates that transport is the main source of these elements. Concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Mn, and As in street dust of Tyumen were lower compared to many large cities, while Cr, Ni, and Co were higher. Concentrations of PAH were comparable to other large nonindustrial cities. Total contamination of street dust by both PTEs and PAHs showed more robust relationships with the number of roadway lanes rather than land use. The estimated carcinogenic risks were low in 70% of samples and medium in 30% of samples. Noncarcinogenic risks were attributed to exposure to Co, Ni, V, and As. The total noncarcinogenic risk for adults was found to be negligible, while the risk was found to be moderate for children. On page 5, in the second paragraph, the authors inadvertently included inaccurate information for the description of the analytical method.Efficient operating room (OR) scheduling can improve OR utilization and reduce costs. We hypothesize that the scheduling office (ORSO) leading the modification scheduling process could increase OR utilization rate. Using retrospective data from a single tertiary hospital in two consecutive calendar years, we compared OR utilization rate, the number of daily cases and cumulative operative time in the pre- and post-implementation of scheduling process alteration. We operated about 100,609 cases in the OR during the study period. Daytime utilization rate increased from 85.6% to 89.4% (P  less then  0.001); overall OR utilization rate from 115.1% to 117.6% (P = 0.019); daily case numbers from 229.9 ± 7.3 to 239.6 ± 7.6 (P = 0.0.14); and cumulative operation time of total and daytime cases from 611.7 case-hour/day to 624.5 case-hour/day (P = 0.013) and from 510.8 case-hour/day to 533.8 case-hour/day (P  less then  0.001), respectively. Evening/night time case-hour significantly decreased from 100.9 case-hour/day to 90.
