Study Two replicated the methods of Study One comparing the BA condition (which had the most robust benefits) to the NC condition while collecting fMRI data during the memory task. Analyses assessed condition differences of activation during encoding and recall. There were no condition differences during memory encoding, however there was a condition effect on activation in occipito-temporal regions during the memory recall trials. Consistent with previous research, exercise appears to benefit memory with some exercise prior to exposure being important for the benefits achieved. Further, exercise affects neural activation and the results appear complementary to the behavior findings. Future research should use a within-subjects design to control for heterogeneity in behavior and neural activation.Vanadium is considered as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (V2O5, IARC Group 2B), yet uncertainties persist related to the toxicity mechanisms of the multiple forms of vanadium. Exposure to vanadium often co-occurs with other metals or with organic compounds that can be transformed by cytochrome p450 (CYP) enzymes into DNA-reactive carcinogens. Therefore, effects of a soluble form of vanadium (sodium metavanadate, NaVO3) and aflatoxin-B1 (AFB1) were tested separately and together, for induction of CYP activities, DNA damage (γH2AX and DNA alkaline unwinding assays), and DNA methylation changes (global genome and DNA repeats) in HepaRG or HepG2 liver cell lines. NaVO3 (≥ 2.3 μM) reduced CYP1A1 and CYP3A4 activities and induced DNA damage, butcaused important cell proliferation only in HepaRG cells. As a binary mixture, NaVO3 did not modify the effects of AFB1. There was no reproducible effect of NaVO3 ( less then 21 μM) on DNA methylation in AluYb8, satellite-α, satellite-2, and by the luminometric methylation assay, but DNA methylation flow-cytometry signals in HepG2 cells (25-50 μM) increased at the G1 and G2 cell cycle phases. In conclusion, cell lines responded differently to NaVO3 supporting the importance of investigating more than one cell line, and a carcinogenic role of NaVO3 might reside at low concentrations by stimulating the proliferation of tumorigenic cells.Over the last two decades the United States has experienced a significant increase in the medical and non-medical use of opioid drugs, resulting in record numbers of opioid-related overdoses and deaths. There was an initial increase in non-medical use of prescription opioids around 2002, followed later by increased heroin use and then most recently fentanyl. Inhalation is a common route of administration for opioids, with a documented history spanning back to Mediterranean antiquity and up through modern use with e-cigarette devices. Unfortunately, preclinical studies using inhalation as the route of administration remain relatively few. This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of e-cigarette vapor inhalation of heroin in rats. Non-contingent exposure to heroin or methadone vapor produced anti-nociceptive efficacy in male and female rats. Female rats were trained to self-administer heroin vapor; the most-preferring half of the distribution obtained more vapor reinforcers when the concentration of heroin was reduced in the vapor vehicle and when pre-treated with the opioid receptor antagonist naloxone. The anti-nociceptive effect of heroin self-administered by vapor was identical in magnitude to that produced by intravenous self-administration. Finally, anxiety-like behavior increased 24-48 h after last heroin vapor access, consistent with withdrawal signs observed after intravenous self-administration. In sum, these studies show that rewarding and anti-nociceptive effects of heroin are produced in rats by vapor inhalation using e-cigarette technology. Importantly, self-administration models by this route can be deployed to determine health effects of inhaled heroin or other opioids.Healthcare clinics are uniquely positioned to screen for food insecurity and refer patients to food resources. This study examines this approach to address this social condition. A 2018 intercept survey of 1,103 adult patients recruited from across 11 clinic waiting rooms in Los Angeles County was conducted to describe the prevalence of food insecurity and whether Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participation and the degree to which patients anticipated their clinics to help them locate food varied by socio-demographic factors. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/guanidine-thiocyanate.html The prevalence of food insecurity was high for this low-income survey sample (63.4%); 72% of Spanish-speaking Latinx reported experiencing it. For those who experienced food insecurity, older age was associated with lower odds of SNAP participation. Spanish-speaking Latinx had higher odds of anticipating help from a clinic to find food relative to English-speaking Latinx (Adjusted Odds Ratio 1.88, 95% Confidence Interval 1.18, 2.98). An exploratory analysis showed that common reasons for not enrolling in SNAP included older adults not knowing how to apply to the program and Spanish-speaking Latinx worrying about citizenship status as it relates to the eligibility process. Findings revealed disparities in the prevalence of food insecurity and SNAP participation among patients of Los Angeles' low income clinics. Information from this study can help inform low-income clinics' efforts to intervene on food insecurity in their patient population.Exposure to particulate matter causes skin aging. In the present study, we investigated the effect of an algae-derived phenolic compound, dieckol (DK), against Chinese particulate matter (CPM)-stimulated aging in vitro in human dermal fibroblasts (HDF cells) and in vivo in zebrafish. DK effectively protected HDF cells against CPM-induced oxidative stress by scavenging intracellular reactive oxygen species. Moreover, DK significantly improved collagen synthesis and inhibited intracellular collagenase activity in CPM-stimulated HDF cells. In addition, DK remarkably reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases via regulating the nuclear factor kappa B, activator protein 1, and mitogen-activated protein kinases signaling pathways in CPM-stimulated HDF cells. Furthermore, the in vivo test results demonstrated that DK effectively improved the survival rate of CPM-stimulated zebrafish via suppressing oxidative stress and inflammatory response. In conclusion, this study suggests that DK is a potential anti-aging compound that can be used as a therapeutic agent to improve CPM-induced skin aging, or as an ingredient to develop a cosmetic or medicine in the cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical industries.
