prototypes.In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many governments around the world now recommend, or require, that their citizens cover the lower half of their face in public. Consequently, many people now wear surgical face masks in public. We investigated whether surgical face masks affected the performance of human observers, and a state-of-the-art face recognition system, on tasks of perceptual face matching. Participants judged whether two simultaneously presented face photographs showed the same person or two different people. We superimposed images of surgical masks over the faces, creating three different mask conditions control (no masks), mixed (one face wearing a mask), and masked (both faces wearing masks). We found that surgical face masks have a large detrimental effect on human face matching performance, and that the degree of impairment is the same regardless of whether one or both faces in each pair are masked. Surprisingly, this impairment is similar in size for both familiar and unfamiliar faces. When matching masked faces, human observers are biased to reject unfamiliar faces as "mismatches" and to accept familiar faces as "matches". Finally, the face recognition system showed very high classification accuracy for control and masked stimuli, even though it had not been trained to recognise masked faces. However, accuracy fell markedly when one face was masked and the other was not. Our findings demonstrate that surgical face masks impair the ability of humans, and naïve face recognition systems, to perform perceptual face matching tasks. Identification decisions for masked faces should be treated with caution.3D cell culture methods have been an integral part of and an essential tool for mammary gland and breast cancer research for half a century. In fact, mammary gland researchers, who discovered and deciphered the instructive role of extracellular matrix (ECM) in mammary epithelial cell functional differentiation and morphogenesis, were the pioneers of the 3D cell culture techniques, including organoid cultures. The last decade has brought a tremendous increase in the 3D cell culture techniques, including modifications and innovations of the existing techniques, novel biomaterials and matrices, new technological approaches, and increase in 3D culture complexity, accompanied by several redefinitions of the terms "3D cell culture" and "organoid". In this review, we provide an overview of the 3D cell culture and organoid techniques used in mammary gland biology and breast cancer research. We discuss their advantages, shortcomings and current challenges, highlight the recent progress in reconstructing the complex mammary gland microenvironment in vitro and ex vivo, and identify the missing 3D cell cultures, urgently needed to aid our understanding of mammary gland development, function, physiology, and disease, including breast cancer.Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are a group of modified proteins and/or lipids with damaging potential. AGEs-RAGE pathway plays a critical role to induce neurodegenerative encephalopathy. Statins can reduce the expression of AGEs-induced AGEs receptor (RAGE) in the aorta. It is not clear whether statins have potential benefits on AGEs-induced cognitive impairment. In this study, the effects of atorvastatin (ATV) on inflammation and oxidation stress in the cerebral cortex were investigated, and the underlying mechanisms were explored. Apolipoprotein E (ApoE)-/- male mice were divided into four groups control, AGEs, AGEs + ALT711 (Alagebrium chloride) and AGEs + ATV. β-amyloid (Aβ) formation in the cerebral cortex was assessed through Congo red staining and the functional state of neurons was evaluated by Nissl's staining. Immunostaining was performed to assess the accumulation of AGEs in the cerebral cortex. The expressions of mRNA and protein of RAGE, Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) p65 and Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-oxidase (NADPH oxidase) p47phox were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and western blot. There were significant increases in AGEs deposit, Aβ formation, and the expressions of RAGE, NF-κB p65, and NADPH oxidase p47phox, and a decrease Nissl body in AGEs group compared with control group. ALT711 group recovered above change compared with AGEs group. Atorvastatin reduced Aβ formation and suppressed AGEs-induced expressions of NF-κB p65 and NADPH oxidase p47phox. Atorvastatin has little effects on AGEs deposit and RAGE expressions. Atorvastatin alleviates AGEs-induced neuronal impairment by alleviating inflammation and oxidative stress via inhibiting NADPH oxidase-NF-κB pathway.In this study, fate and contaminant transport model-driven human health risk indexes were calculated due to the presence of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in the subsurface environment of air force base area in Florida, USA. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/tpen.html Source concentration data of DNAPLs was used for the calculation of transport model-driven health risk indexes for the children and adult sub-population via direct oral ingestion and skin dermal contact exposure scenario using 10,000 Monte Carlo type simulations. The highest variation in the probability distribution of transformed DNAPL compound (cis-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) > vinyl chloride (VC)) was observed as compared to parent DNAPL (tetrachloroethene (PCE)) based on the 50-year simulation timespan. Transformed DNAPL compounds (VC, cis-DCE) posed the highest risk to human health for a longer duration (up to 15 years) in comparison to parent DNAPL (PCE), as non-carcinogenic hazard quotient varied from 400 to 1100. Carcinogenic health risks were observed as 3-order of magnitude higher than safe limit (HQSafe less then  10-6) from 2nd to 5th year timespan and fall in the high-risk zone, indicating the need for a remediation plan for a contaminated site. Variance attribution analysis revealed that concentration, body weight, and exposure duration (contribution percentage - 70 to 95%) were the most important parameters, highlighting the impact of dispersivity and exposure model in the estimation of risk indexes. This approach can help decision-makers when a contaminated site with partial data on hydrogeological properties and with higher uncertainty in model parameters is to be assessed for the formulation of remediation measures.
