Results After benzoate treatment, DAAO inhibition was correlated with ADAS-cog decrease (p = 0.034), while baseline DAAO level was correlated with baseline BEHAVE-AD score. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that cognitive improvement after benzoate treatment was correlated with DAAO decrease, female gender, younger age, BMI, baseline BPSD severity, and antipsychotic use. Conclusion The finding suggests that sodium benzoate may have potential to benefit cognitive function in a fraction of BPSD patients after 6 weeks of treatment. Of note, the precision medicine approach may be helpful for identifying individuals who could respond to benzoate. More studies are warranted to confirm the preliminary findings. Methods This case-control study included 583 patients with MDD and 564 controls, and the genotypic and allelic distributions of the IRS-1 gene's four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected by TaqMan SNP genotyping technology. Of the 583 patients, 191 underwent a further detailed interview about symptom severity and family history of mental illness. The chi-square or t test was used to analyze the data, and analyses were performed using SPSS19.0 software. Results A haplotype in the 5'-upstream region of IRS-1 consisting of rs13411764 and rs3820926 was a risk factor of MDD. Patients with a family history of mental illness were more likely to have a GG genotype in rs13411764 and a G-T haplotype containing rs13411714-rs3820926. Discussion The findings imply that the haplotype consisting of rs13411764 and rs3820926 in the upstream of IRS-1 is a risk factor for MDD. This haplotype could affect IRS-1 expression levels, and it is mostly inherited from parents. Thus, the presence of variants in the upstream region of IRS-1 is a risk factor of MDD, and this study could serve as a convincing reference for further studies. © 2020 Wang et al.Introduction Studies have been reported that frequent use of methamphetamine (MA) is associated with brain function impairment, mood disorders and excessive free radical production accompanied by the decreased level of the antioxidant response elements, but no study investigated their correlations simultaneously. In the current study, the correlation of brain function, depression and anxiety levels, and the serum levels of PON1 (an antioxidant) in MA-dependent patients were investigated. Methods Nineteen active MA abusers and 18 control subjects performed color-word Stroop task during fMRI and the state of their depression, anxiety, and stress were measured by the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 Items (DASS-21) questionnaire. Their blood samples were collected to measure the level of PON1 by the human enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit and its correlation with the measured variables was studied. Results Analysis of fMRI findings showed frontocingulate dysfunction in Stroop effect condition, including left anterior cingulate cortex, paracingulate gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, and frontal pole in MA-dependent patients, which was associated with a higher level of depression and decreased level of serum PON1 in these patients. Discussion The results of the current study showed that MA-dependency is associated with frontocingulate dysfunction, decreased serum PON1 concentration, and increased depression/anxiety, which is worth to be more studied to elucidate their roles in the pathophysiology of MA addiction. © 2020 Ghavidel et al.Background Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is an important antioxidant enzyme in the body. The weakening of the antioxidant system causes damage to the cells and tissues that make up the organism, adversely affects the function of the nervous system, and ultimately leads to schizophrenia (SCZ). Previous studies have yielded inconsistent results across different ethnic populations. Purpose This case-control study was carried out to investigate whether genetic polymorphisms in GST could be associated with SCZ in the Chinese Han population. Patients and Methods A total of 794 participants, including 379 SCZ patients (case group) and 415 healthy individuals (control group), were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length for polymorphisms in GST genes. Results The study found that the frequency of the GSTM1 null genotype was higher in case group than control group (p=0.003). The frequency of the GSTM1 and GSTT1 double null genotype was also higher in case group than control group (p=0.008). Conclusion We conclude that the GSTM1 null genotype and the GSTM1 and GSTT1 double null genotype may be related to the onset of SCZ in Chinese Han population. © 2020 Yan et al.Objective Rating scales and neuropsychological tests including continuous performance tests (CPTs) are widely used to assess executive functions (EFs). Event-related potentials (ERPs) are also used to index certain EFs such as action preparation and inhibition. In this descriptive study, we examined the associations between results on an EF rating scale, a CPT and ERP components in ADHD as a function of age. Methods Fifty-nine patients with ADHD (and more often than not with comorbid disorders) in two age groups (9-12 years and 13-17 years) were assessed using EF ratings, a visual CPT and ERPs (CueP3, P3go and P3no-go). Results There were age related changes in the ERPs with the CueP3 amplitude being stronger in children, and the P3no-go amplitude stronger in adolescents. The associations between the EF measures were different in the two age groups. In particular, the P3no-go seemed to reflect different EF-related processes in children versus adolescents. Conclusion Age group effects were seen on a selection of ERP amplitudes in this sample of patients with ADHD.
