Histological analyses revealed a larger volume for the amygdala and smaller volume for the superior colliculi, primary visual cortex and medial secondary visual cortex, in anophthalmic compared with sighted mice. The absence of superficial visual layers of the superior colliculus and the thinner cortical layer IV of the primary and secondary visual cortices may explain the smaller volume of these areas, although this was observed in a limited sample. The present study shows large-scale brain plasticity in a mouse model of congenital blindness. In addition, the congruence of MRI and histological findings support the use of MRI to investigate structural brain plasticity in the mouse.Specificity proteins (SPs) have pro-oncogenic functions in cancer cells, ranging from cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. There is strong evidence that several antineoplastic drugs target depletion of SP proteins via different pathways. However, the mode of action of SP3 and the underlying consequences of its depletion are not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that SP3 is overexpressed in invasive breast cancer cells vs normal counterparts. The gene expression analysis from The Cancer Genome Atlas datasets indicated that SP3 is strongly correlated with Akt signalling-related proteins, G protein subunit alpha 13, and RAB33B (RAB33B, member RAS oncogene family). RNA interference of SP3 decreased active phosphorylation of Akt at serine and threonine sites. These findings indicate that SP3 exhibits a pro-oncogenic function, which clearly fits the description of an nononcogene addiction gene. Future analyses are prompted to uncover the SP3 gene regulation function and to reveal downstream targets of SP3 in breast cancer.Foot and mouth disease (FMD) virus remains enzootic in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) due to insufficient control measures, including low vaccination coverage. We assessed virus epidemiology and evaluated knowledge, attitude and practice of Lao farmers and animal health stakeholders towards FMD to support politics in devising evidence-based control measures. Sera were collected from 972 domestic ruminants in three provinces of Lao PDR Vientiane Capital, Vientiane and Xiengkhouang provinces. Seroprevalence of antibodies directed against non-structural proteins of FMD virus was assessed using a commercial ELISA. Overall 35% (340/972) of the ruminants had antibodies against FMD virus with a similar seroprevalence in each province. Seroprevalence depended significantly on the ruminant species (p less then .001) 61% of buffaloes, but only 41% of cattle and 15% of goats were seropositive. While antibodies against FMD serotype Asia 1 were absent, 87% (297/340) of the seropositive animals had antibodies against FMD serotype O and 32% (110/340) against FMD serotype A. Many seropositive animals (31%) had antibodies against both serotypes O and A. The majority of the farmers could name the symptoms of FMD and the susceptible animal species. Although many had likely observed FMD outbreaks in their herd and were aware of FMD vaccines, only few vaccinated their animals. This study confirms that FMD remains enzootic in at least three provinces of Lao PDR where vaccination coverage is low. It also shows the relevance of nationwide active and passive disease surveillance, as well as of vaccination campaigns using bivalent FMD vaccines and targeting all susceptible animal species. Chronic pain is the leading cause of disability. Improving our understanding of pain occurrence and treatment effectiveness requires robust methods to measure pain at scale. Smartphone-based pain manikins are human-shaped figures to self-report location-specific aspects of pain on people's personal mobile devices. We searched the main app stores to explore the current state of smartphone-based pain manikins and to formulate recommendations to guide their development in the future. The search yielded 3,938 apps. Twenty-eight incorporated a pain manikin and were included in the analysis. For all apps, it was unclear whether they had been tested and had end-user involvement in the development. Pain intensity and quality could be recorded in 28 and 13 apps, respectively, but this was location specific in only 11 and 4. Most manikins had two or more views (n=21) and enabled users to shade or select body areas to record pain location (n=17). Seven apps allowed personalising the manikin appearance. Twelve apps smartphone-based manikins to become adopted more widely, future studies should harness the digital nature of manikins, and establish the measurement properties of manikins. Furthermore, we believe that involving end users in the development process will increase acceptability of manikins as a tool for self-reporting pain. Bismuth-containing quadruple therapy is an effective alternative first-line therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of a modified twice-a-day bismuth quadruple regimen (BQT-2) with low-dose (1000mg total) metronidazole as first-line therapy for the eradication of Hpylori. In this prospective pilot study, patients diagnosed with Hpylori infection and naïve to eradication therapy were included. The modified BQT-2 therapy consisted of rabeprazole 20mg, amoxicillin 1g, metronidazole 500mg, and tripotassium dicitrato bismuthate 600mg (elemental bismuth 240mg) twice daily, given 30minutes before morning and evening meals for 14days. Hpylori eradication was assessed by C-urea breath test conducted at least 4weeks after therapy completion. In 66 patients who received the modified BQT-2 regimen, the compliance rate was 100% and the Hpylori eradication rate was 77.3%. Hpylori was successfully cultured in 50 (75.8%) patients. The resistance rates to metronidazole and clarithromycin were 30.
