Corneal dystrophies (CDs) are a heterogeneous group of bilateral, genetically determined, noninflammatory bilateral corneal diseases that are usually limited to the cornea. Here, we report the case of an extra-adrenal abdominal pheochromocytoma initially manifesting as haemoptysis/dyspnoea during exercise without classic symptoms. A 22-year-old man with a history of severe dyspnoea experienced difficulties in breathing following a marathon owing to haemoptysis that required ventilator management 1year before presentation. His father had undergone surgery for ectopic pheochromocytoma. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a 30-mm tumour between the inferior vena cava and pancreatic head while urinalysis revealed abnormally high noradrenaline levels. He was clinically diagnosed with an extra-adrenal abdominal ectopic pheochromocytoma. After controlling blood pressure, surgery was performed, and the tumour was successfully removed. Histopathology revealed chromogranin A (+), synaptophysin (+), S100 protein (+), and MIB-1 index of 1%. Globally, 15 million neonates are born prematurely every year, over half in low income countries (LICs). Premature and low birth weight neonates have a higher risk of intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH). There are minimal data regarding IVH in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to examine the incidence, severity and timing of and modifiable risk factors for IVH amongst low-birth-weight neonates in Uganda. This is a prospective cohort study of neonates with birthweights of ≤2000 g admitted to a neonatal unit (NU) in a regional referral hospital in eastern Uganda. Maternal data were collected from interviews and medical records. Neonates had cranial ultrasound (cUS) scans on the day of recruitment and days 3, 7 and 28 after birth. Risk factors were tabulated and are presented alongside odds ratios (ORs) and adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for IVH incidence. Outcomes included incidence, timing and severity of IVH and 28-day survival. Overall, 120 neonates were recruited. IVH was reported in 34.2% of neonates;NU in eastern Uganda, more than a third of neonates born weighing ≤2000 g had an IVH and the majority of these occurred by day 7. We found that vaginal birth, earlier gestation and need for resuscitation after admission to the NU increased the risk of IVH. Nocardia asteroides infection in patients with Pemphigus foliaceus (PF) has never been reported. We report an interesting case of nocardiosis-characterized by pulmonary intra-cavitary infection, in a 54-year-old man with PF and diabetes mellitus. The man finally recovered from the infection. This is the first case reporting pulmonary nocardiosis in a patient with PF. Hydrogen cross-feeding microbes form a functionally important subset of the human colonic microbiota. The three major hydrogenotrophic functional groups of the colon sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), methanogens and reductive acetogens, have been linked to wide ranging impacts on host physiology, health and wellbeing. An existing mathematical model for microbial community growth and metabolism was combined with models for each of the three hydrogenotrophic functional groups. The model was further developed for application to the colonic environment via inclusion of responsive pH, host metabolite absorption and the inclusion of host mucins. Predictions of the model, using two existing metabolic parameter sets, were compared to experimental faecal culture datasets. Model accuracy varied between experiments and measured variables and was most successful in predicting the growth of high relative abundance functional groups, such as the Bacteroides, and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production.
